Disturbed Nanny Allegedly Kills Two Children In Posh NYC Neighborhood
There are some parenting stories that you never want to report, or even hear about. Last night while I was engrossed in homework help, the news switched from the wild upcoming weather to a news story that was unfolding.
Two children were found stabbed in a posh apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Police also found a nanny with a self-inflicted knife wound to her neck.
Shortly later, we were told the grim and horrendous news: a mother came home around 5:30pm and found the horrific scene of her two of her three children bleeding to death from multiple stab wounds in the bathtub and the nanny slashed her own throat right in front of the horrified mother.
When the mother took the 3-year-old out to a swim lesson, the nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, 50, stayed behind with the 2-year-old boy Leo and 6-year-old girl Lucia, and allegedly stabbed them both. The children’s father is Harvard grad Kevin Krim, CNBC’s general manager of digital content and the mother, Marina Krim is believed to be a pediatrician.
The children were pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Hospital shortly after. Ortega is in critical condition in a medically induced coma.
Neighbors describe the blood-curdling scream when Krim and the building’s super found the children:
“He’s screaming at the top of his lungs,” He said, ‘The kids are dead! The kids are dead! And the nanny has something sticking out of her throat!’ ”
Mrs. Krim was seen clinging on to her 3-year-old child and screaming inconsolably while getting into a police car. It is absolutely heartbreaking.
As of now, there is no indication that Ortega had any prior mental or emotional problems. The family was very close to her and even went to visit her family in the Dominican Republic over the summer. Earlier yesterday, Mrs. Krim wrote on her blog about how cute and lively her children were, “I am very proud that the 3 kids absolutely love to play together and never seem to get bored at home. They are constantly thinking up fun things to do in the house.”
All over NYC today, parents are naturally disturbed by this horrendous incident and there are those media outlets that will use this tragedy as an opportunity to discuss if hiring a nanny to watch your kids is a good idea, which is revolting. This could have very easily been a teacher or daycare worker instead of a nanny. No one would ever imagine that anything like this would happen to their children.
Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this tragedy.

There is no way that woman did not have mental problems. I am a mom and a nanny and I love my nanny kids like they are my own. This story is so horribly sad. That poor family…
Kristen, no one said that monster did not have mental problems, obviously she does. What the article said if that she APPEARED not to have mental problems since the couple went to the D.R. and stayed 9 days to check out the nanny and her family.
This story is so unimaginably painful. I don’t know how, as a mother, you could ever stop screaming from anguish. It is beyond tragic.
its so sad to not be able to trust people with your kids because we dont know their deep intentions. this is a parents worst nightmare! My condolences goes out to the parents and their beautiful angels!
You mentioned “This could have very easily been a teacher or daycare worker instead of a nanny” – let’s be real, in this day and age, it could have been one of parents, a neighbor, a random stranger in a grocery store or outside of a grocery store while a local congresswoman was out campaigning, or a lunatic in a movie theater. I threw up, literally, threw up when I heard this story on the news this morning. I was brushing my teeth and my 3 year old and 16 month old were scurrying about the bathroom and I just lost it. My heart deeply aches for the parents, the 3 year old child that witnessed this scene, and their extended family and friends who now have to carrying on while trying to make sense of such a horrific act and subsequent losses. My humble thoughts and prayers will be with this family.
