A solid DSLR with some great features for shooting kids, the Alpha includes a “macro” mode for those days when they want to be this close to your face. A little cheaper than our “best splurge,” it’s a good starter camera. The shutter, however, was a bit slow – not quite as good for fleeting moments. The Alpha could also use a little help in low light conditions, so if you’re hoping to do a lot of indoor photography, invest in an off-camera flash.
