Babble Best: Travel High Chairs

Dine out with these five portable eat seats. by Kate Bayless

April 22, 2008

Traveling with kids is hard enough as it is, but lugging around a high chair (impractical), relying on restaurant high chairs (icky and not always available) or holding baby on your lap (oh, you wanted to enjoy your meal?) aren't always ideal solutions. Fortunately, a portable, packable travel high chair can make life much easier for parents on-the-go or those with limited space at home. Here are our five highest rated hook-ons. — Kate Bayless

Babble Best: phil & teds MeToo — $45.99

Don't be afraid to be a follower and say "Me too!" to phil & teds' portable high chair. The MeToo by phil & teds easily ranks at the top of our list for its simplicity, portability and ease of use. Weighing in at just under two lbs., the MeToo is one of the lightest seats we tested and one of the simplest to use. Unlike other seats that require assembly or instructions on how to use the attachment mechanism, the MeToo arrives in one piece and attaches quickly with strong aluminum C-clamps to the table (5/8"-2" thick). Available in red, navy or black, the simple design of the nylon seat easily wipes clean and, unlike much of the competition, the MeToo can hold children up to 37 lbs. Best of all, the seat is über portable, folding up to a compact 13x9x1" which I've stashed in my suitcase and diaper bag. If you're a frequent traveler or just short on space, the MeToo is a worthy investment. (And keep a lookout for phil & teds' upgraded travel high chair, the Lobster, coming soon!)

Inglesina Fast — $39.99

The Inglesina Fast gets high honors for its list of extras. Extra thick seat padding, a carrying bag, a seat back pocket and the ability to attach to extra thick tables (up to 3.3 inches!) make it a great choice for any outing. We were fans of the extra-wide clamps that attach to the thick picnic tables at our local parks and campsites — a task many of the other seats failed. The pre-assembled Fast attaches easily to tables, is available in four removable, washable fabric colors and can hold kids up to 33 lbs. Those extras do add a few more pounds to the overall seat weight (3.5 lbs), but we think it's well worth it for the included goodies.

KABOOST — $35-$40

Not your traditional travel high chair, the KABOOST is a four-legged base that attaches to nearly any chair and boosts your child up to table height. Each of the spring-loaded legs fastens onto a variety of chair styles and raises the seat either 3.75" or 4.5" -- the same heights as standard booster seats. While it is capable of holding up to 300 lbs, keep in mind that KABOOST is not a restraint system, so your child needs to be able to sit alone in a chair. Though slightly odd-shaped, KABOOST does fold up rather compactly and its 3.5-lb weight makes it travel friendly. Available in green, chocolate, natural and a deluxe charcoal edition that includes a travel bag, we enjoyed the ease of use, the non-skid feet, and having the little man feel like a big boy at the table.

HandySitt — $89-$99

Although parents may choke a bit on the price, your kids' airways will remain clear while sitting in the ergonomically correct HandySitt. Constructed by hand in Denmark, the solid wood HandySitt attaches to the back of most chairs and works as both a booster seat and harness for children to eat at the table with you. Although their website demonstrates the HandySitt on a variety of chairs, the first one we tried it on didn't fit, so be sure to check out the required chair dimensions here before purchasing. Though weighing in at over five lbs, the HandySitt folds flat (21x12x3") and is easy enough to bring to restaurants or family gatherings. And if you feel that you didn't spend enough on the seat itself, you can always throw down more money to add the separate cushion (nice, but certainly not necessary) or the travel bag. A solid, sturdy, yet simple seat, pick this one up for its streamlined design.

First Years On-The-Go Booster — $24.99

While not a seat for the fashion conscious, the On-The-Go Booster by First Years is cheap, compact and practical. The seat folds in half to a scant two inches high and weighs less than two pounds. making it easy to carry in a diaper bag, suitcase or over the shoulder with the tether straps. Set-up involves simply opening the self-inflating valve and adjusting the seat's boost from two inches to four inches. The seat is geared for nine-month-olds up to 40 lb.-ers, but I've heard many parents say that it doesn't work as well for the younger set. Our nearly two-year-old liked the padded boost and comfortable harness. We were fans of the quick set-up, the portability and the price point. Now if only they could make it in deluxe charcoal . . .
