Babble Best: Baby Blankets

Cuddle up with our five favorites. by Ada Calhoun

November 27, 2007

We got a lot of blankets as hand-me-downs and here at the office, and we have used every single one of them. We know you're supposed to use sleep sacks instead until the kid's, like, five, and officially we can see how that makes sense, but as an infant, our son loved being carried around bundled, and now as a small toddler, he loves burrowing into a pile of blankets at bedtime. So, after months of hands-on research, we present the five prettiest, softest of the stack. — Ada Calhoun

Dwell Baby Cashmere Silk Knit Blanket - $137

It doesn't really get classier than Dwell Baby. These luxurious 28" x 34.5" cashmere silk rectangles come in classy, subtle shades of pink, blue, brown and green, and they all scream fancy. Coveted by modern design fans, the Dwell label has become the baby-shower equivalent of the blue Tiffany box under the Christmas tree.

Get it at the Dwell shop.

Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket - $78

When these 29" by 35" blankets came into the office, there was a feeding frenzy. "They're soooooo soft," cooed our interns, petting them. Indeed, they are really decadent. Our favorite is this mass of fake fur trimmed in satin.

Get it at WhatSheBuys, or find stores at Little Giraffe.

Pashmina Store Cashmere Baby Blankets - $69

These 36" by 36" three-ply cashmere blankets are made in Nepal and distributed online by The Pashmina Store. We like them because they're soft and swank-looking but way more affordable than most cashmere stuff you see. Simple and practical, they're perfect as a light throw for summer or as a winter layer. And they're machine washable, although they'll last a lot longer if you hand wash them.

Mairzey Dotes Baby Blanket - $49

These sturdy 29" by 35" blankets (chenille on one side, 100% cotton on the other) are great as an under-blanket or to toss down in the park. They also come in some beautiful vintage prints, including this sophisticated abstract-floral pattern in baby blue. We like the weight; unlike thinner blankets, it actually stands a chance of staying on a squirming baby.

Butterbean Blanket by Baby Bean Sprout- $85

These quilt-like chenille and cotton blankets (31" x 36") have crazy pockets on them in old-fashioned fabrics. We were thinking, who needs pockets on a blanket? It's kind of like pockets on baby clothes. ("What you got in there, baby, cigarettes?") But for trips in the car, it makes total sense. Drape the baby in this blanket and tuck some toys in there. It's like time-release fun.

Get it at Baby Bean Sprout.
