A certain desperation fuels the Spring Break vacation. Unlike the holidays, when you travel to spend some QT with extended family, or the summer vacation, when you cash in accrued vacation days to leisurely explore another part of the world, Spring Break is about the gut-wrenching need to get the hell out of Dodge.
By the time March rolls around, the kids are going stir-crazy; planning a trip is like blowing a big Resusci-Annie breath into your family’s lifeless winter routine. The problem is, April is an odd time of year to visit many tourist destinations: most ski trails are slushy or closed, rural areas in the Northeast and Midwest are knee-deep in mud, temperate islands from Bermuda to Greece are still cold, and beaches in Florida and Mexico are clogged with drunk college students. And you can quickly rule out getting into any of the highly commercial, super popular resorts like Atlantis or Disney, which sold out for Spring Break many months ago.
Still, the kids are off from school, the tax refund check is in the mail, and it’s time to get away. Whether you’re looking to soak up some sun, get some fresh mountain air, or just hang out at a well-run resort that knows how to entertain kids, here are five great family getaways for the ultimate Spring Break trip. — Tara Mandy

Montana
The whole dude ranch, Wild West adventure thing seems a bit overdone, but the folks at Paws Up, Montana, really know how to show kids a good time. The two-year-old resort offers half-day ($50) and full-day ($80) programs for children ages 5-12 that include activities like building a tee-pee, hiking with maps and compasses, panning for gold, fly-fishing, wrangling and old-fashioned wagon rides. Meanwhile, you’ll all be staying in a super-deluxe cottage with a kitchen, a washer/ dryer, and a golf cart for getting around.
The dirt roads can get a bit muddy this time of year, but it’s worth the slash in high-season rates. Besides, since when did your kids have anything against getting dirty? Paws Up, Montana — Rates in April start at $395, including meals
