feedback for "Global Naming"

Ha! Funny stuff, Anna. Fondue has a rather nice ring to it. A bit cheesy though (sorry! feeble but had to be said!)In your case, LaFondue might have a better ring to it.
I can't resist pointing out a blog post I did a few months back on the weirdness of Utah names.
"Utahna: Baby's Got a Bad, Bad Name" can be found here, should anyone feel so inclined. My top faves from the Utah Baby Namer database (wacky, fun site) might prove inspiring. to some.

Fondue ... hehehe!
Funny how the 'right' name always fits just so.

OK, I have to say I am *hugely* surprised your Colombian husband allowed Nicolas. That was one of the names I chose for a boy and my Colombian husband said that the name sounds like the phrase 'it doesn't drain' in Spanish so it was nixed.

story of our lives! Try mixing a Utahan (moi) with Shanghainese (hubby) and a slew of family members that were "appointed" by tradition to name any new family members. It got interesting (to put it nicely) but we're all still alive and our now 2-year old daughter has enough names to cover a Utah family 3 fold. We named her Empress (husbands choice). We call her Emi (smile in Japanese) or Em, but she also has 3...yes 3 Chinese names. If that weren't enough for her, my good ol' Utahan parents had to throw in "Empi" (at least it's not "LaEmpi" right?!?) Poor kid. Good luck w/ numero 2. We haven't taken the plunge in part to the naming process!

Names are fraught with memories, associations and opinions - very difficult but fun in a demented sort of way... My husband is French Canadian and I am anglo-Canadian - we could not do Tr or Th sounds (nothing my mom cannot pronounce!) and Roch had strong likes and dislikes - as do I! We kept nixing each others choices out of spite it seemed after a while (you do not like mine, I do not like yours...) And to make matters worse, when we were finally getting somewhere with a short list of possibilities, Roch - a policeman - would say definitely not Liam, we just arrested a Liam today - what a pain. But it all worked out in the end and we have 2 boys who suit their names to a T - Samuel and Luc. Considering his families suggestions were Felix and Oscar, I think we did okay...

This is priceless, thank you so much for sharing. I'm an (anglo) Canadian married to my Colombian Alex, living in the US and expecting our first baby. It's been an adventure, though nowhere as difficult as yours. We just found out she's a girl, and so we're more seriously looking at girl names now. I wanted to name her Emily after my grandmother but I'm no longer thrilled with that name, having found out that it is the most common name for baby girls in the US and Canada. A friend suggested Amelia as the Spanish equivalent of Emily (I'm not sure I got the name right) and Alex immediately shot that down. Unfortunately, I made the serious error of telling my dad that Emily (his mother's name) is on the list. He's lobbying hard for Emily now. Argh. At least Alex doesn't mind Emily...
If the baby is a boy (and it probably isn't), we're naming him after Alex, so that will be easier...
