As the happy father of one and soon two children, I can tell you two things: 1) having children is indeed magical as everyone says it is, and 2) children dramatically reduce the time you have in your life to be creative -- particularly if you wish to write or paint or what have you in addition to working a full time job.
Before having a child it did not seem possible to me that someone could rationally chose not to procreate if they had the option of doing so; now, a few years into it, as earth-shakingly beautiful as the experience has been for me, I believe that choice could be quite rational for quite a few people.
I am glad that I have gone the kid route, but i can imagine a life in which I had not, and it would be a very rich a fulfilling life as well.
