  1. Your "33 out of 10,000" is misleading because the numbers are too old (1994).  As you state in the sentence right above it, the advent of the "Back to Sleep" campaign caused a huge rise in plagiocephaly cases.  The "Back to Sleep" campaign didn't begin until 1994 (1992 was the American Academy of Pediatrics first recommendation for back sleeping).

    Anecdotally, there were more of my friend's kids that had some plagiocephaly, to some extent or another, than didn't.  The important thing is, it can be very mild and is easily treated with position changes and physical therapy.  The helmet usually isn't necessary.

  2. You raise an excellent point. 1994 is early. But between 1992 and 1994 the incidence of  positional plagiocephaly had already increased by 600% to 33 in every 10,000 births. The general consensus among pediatricians seems to be that there has been a marked increase since then... but exact numbers are hard to pin down. - Ceridwen
