  • Teeny Tiny, Itty Bitty Tatas

A car company at the New Dehli Auto Expo in India lifted its shirt earlier today to expose one perky, proportioned, pert little Tata. The unveiling got the attention of high-level executives. Cheapskates around the world are certainly aroused. Today, everybody is talking about Tatas. They are teeny tiny...

  • Gay PDX Teens Kicked off City Bus for Kissing

Where I come from, teenage lesbians kissing on the city bus would not only not raise eyebrows, it would pretty much be expected, or, at the very least, encouraged. Just one of the many perks of living in the Bay Area, the way I see it. And I've always assumed that our neighbors to the north, in Portland...

  • Urbanist's Dilemma: Better To Raise Kids In Unsafe Neighborhood, or Move to The Dreaded 'Burbs?

Gillian Gillette is a self-described "urbanist:" she grew up on the streets of Chicago, and is raising her own family in San Francisco, in the diverse and dense Mission district. But she, like millions of other city-dwellers with kids, has reached a crossroads: is it better to stay in a small apartment...

  • Re: Childcare costs?

This is my last week with my nanny for my 6-month old baby. We've been paying nanny $350/week, plus $10/hour for every hour she stays over 40 hours/week. I've also probably spent another $30/week to buy the cheeses, fruits and coldcuts my nanny enjoys. (Happy nanny = happy baby!) The daycare baby will...

  • Re: New York City living!

I love having a baby in NYC, but I admit that one of the things I love about it is all the opportunities to do activities, classes, etc. with my daughter. For me it's not about competition or anything like that, it's just that it's fun to have lots to do with her. I definitely think the school frenzy...

  • Re: Preschool expenses!

well, living in Omaha, I am sure things are much cheaper than in NY but I know, costs are terrible. For daycare for my baby and preschool for our daughter, we pay $1500/month which is more than our house payment. It is so oppresive. I feel like we can never get ahead. I can't wait for kindergarden. Even...

  • Preschool expenses!

How do people manage to scrape up enough money to pay for preschool? I just got a shock earlier this month when I received a bill to hold a space for my son for NEXT FALL! I knew I'd have this expense but I thought maybe I'd have until at least the spring to pay for it...

  • Re: New York City living!

I agree with the over-scheduling, but I find that classes are really important (especially in the winter). Not only do the classes get us out of the house (apartment actually...and on the small side!) but it give my little one the opportunity to play with other children and allows me to meet other parents...

  • Re: Is there a playground within walking distance of your home?

We are lucky that in our neck of the woods we have a handful of parks that are all within walking distance. We have two playgrounds that are within three blocks of our apartment and there are quite a few bigger parks and green spaces that are about a 20 minute walk away. That's the beauty of living in...
