When You're Engulfed in Flames, Children and a Bunch of Other Sh*t

Summer came fashionably late in L.A. this year but when she finally arrived? SHE ARRIVED. Angry, unapologetic and 75% humid. I am one of the nicest people you will ever meet when I'm not sweating balls. I hug strangers, fill empty meters, dance down the streets high-fiving Suits while birds sing songs on my shoulders. But when I'm hot and my thong is stuck to my ass with itchy sweat and my shirt is soaked through and my feet are covered with a film of heat-dust-wetness? I might just punch you in the face for no reason.

It's been in the 90's and beyond these last two weeks- some days have reached well into the 100s and contrary to the usual LA heatwave, it's been humid. Humidity is the single reason I could never live on the East coast. I will likely live and die on the West Coast of the US if only because I can't deal with moist summers. Of course, humid or not, I suck at being hot. I'm a sweater. I don't perspire like a lady, I sweat like a man. Like a LARGE, overweight man after a jog. It's too bad, really, especially considering my hairstyle (bangs tend to get a little... piecy in 100 degree weather) but mainly its just wildly uncomfortable.

So all this to bring me to the following unfortunate truth: we don't have air-conditioning in our house. Now, I realize there are people with far less who deal with far more and I am aware of that. I remind myself of this fact every second between the hours of 3-8pm when my house is at its hottest and I'm alone with two kids who are at their fussiest/neediest/hungriest/need-to-wrestliest.

We put a small AC unit in the kids' bedroom hoping this would provide a sanctuary of cool during the summer but Archer refuses to play in his room and we can't really eat dinner on Archer's bed and who am I kidding, there's just not enough room back there for the three of us. Especially when the dogs, who hate the heat equally insist on joining us.

So basically I've turned into a total nightmare bitch. The last few nights Hal hasn't come home until well after 10pm, by which time my hair is sticking straight up with forty rubber bands, my shirt is tied up to my bra, my pants are non-existent and I'm bitter. I'm the bitterest, grumpiest bitch that ever lived. Because I just bathed Fable and then she pooped in her towel and Archer wouldn't brush his teeth and then Fable wanted to nurse at the same time Archer wanted me to read him a story and then Fable pooped again and then Archer insisted on wearing his flannel pajamas which were too hot so we had to argue about that and then Archer wanted me to sing him a song but I forgot the words so he was like "NO! THOSE WORDS ARE WRONG!" and meanwhile Fable still refuses her crib like the plague so I'm pushing her around the house in the stroller and its a thousand degrees and Archer's like "Mommy! Come back and sing me the gigalo song but this time SING IT RIGHT!" and I'm hot and tired and HOT and our house is too small for all of us when it's THIS hot and I give up we need to move somewhere with central air immediately omg I'm going to cry and "Are you crying, mommy?" "No, honey. My eyeballs are just sweating" omg.

Last night brought my red-hot-bitchiness to a whole new level when after an hour and a half of rocking Fable I finally got her to sleep in her crib. It was 11pm. The kids were asleep. The house was clean. The dishes were done. I had just collapsed on the couch when Hal walked through the door, kissed me on the sweaty cheek, went back to check on the kids/adjust Fable's crib bar and accidentally woke her up.

What happened next was not pretty. And it was in that moment of me freaking the fuck out and Hal looking at me like "OMG who are you and what have you done with my wife?" that we both realized that maybe the time has come for us to start looking for a new place to live.

Somewhere with a little more space and a lot more air-conditioning.

Victoria Beckham Wants More Earthquake Lessons

Moving to Los Angeles, Posh had a somewhat hazy understanding that the family would get caught in minor tremors every so often -- but after the earthquake last month that measured a 4.7 on the Richter scale, the danger seems a lot more clear and present.

That's why Posh has apparently booked another round of classes about earthquake preparedness.

“Victoria and the boys had a lesson in a simulator when they first moved to Los Angeles, but she didn’t realise the tremors would be so regular. She’s now asked David to come back from Italy and take another class with her.”

The Beckham family lives on top of the very active 47-mile long Newport-Inglewood Fault. After the scare last month, Posh wants to do everything she can to protect her three boys (Brooklyn, 10, Romeo, 6, and Cruz, 4) including moving the family out of LA.

Hugh Laurie Dishes On Parenting From Across The Pond

After 5 seasons of House, Hugh Laurie is starting to wonder what kind of toll his career and his superstitions have taken on his kids.

“I worry about parenting at this sort of distance, but they are being so generous and so cool about it that - I mean, it might be because they’re English, and they won’t reveal their psychological damage until they’re in their late forties.”

For the first few years of filming, Hugh was convinced that the show would get cancelled so he neglected to move the family Stateside. Then, he decided that as soon as he did make the decision to bring the family, it would somehow jinx the show.

“I’m just convinced that the day we put down a deposit on a house is the day that we get cancelled. It’s just inevitable.”

“In fact, the first season I was in a hotel for the first three months because I was so convinced that we were going to be gone. I didn’t even unpack. I had a half-empty suitcase. I thought it was going to be any day now.”

“I have an apartment now and they visit and I go back when I can. If we get Thanksgiving off in November, I got four days to go back. I go when I can. There’s just a lot of flying.”

Hugh and his wife Jo have three kids: Charlie, 20, Bill, 18, and Rebecca, 15 -- all of whom have now survived years of Hugh living in LA part time. At least the pay is pretty good ($350K per episode).

Jacko Family Continues Masked Reign Of Terror

How long will Michael Jackson make his kids wear creepy masks in public? We'll have to wait and see.

Jacko and his three children, Prince Michael, Paris Michael, and Prince Michael II continued to "hide" their identities from the public in Los Angeles last weekend (by wearing brightly colored masks) officially making the King of Pop one of the weirdest dads on the celebrity parenting circuit.

The masks are supposedly intended to protect the children from the dreaded media (an impulse that I can totally understand). Still, after a few months, isn't the solution starting to be worse than the problem? Not to mention, the masks haven't exactly silenced rumors about Jacko's crazy parenting style... far from it.

You know that something is a bit off with your dad when he decides to name all three of his children after himself (Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, and Prince Michael Jackson II). That's gotta be a pretty good indicator that your dad is either extremely egocentric, or just has a tough time grasping this thing we call reality. In MJ's case, it's probably a mixture of both.

Texting Tween Too Busy For Rock Star Father's Affection

The Rockets weren't the only ones getting denied on the court during game 5 of the Lakers-Rockets playoff series. It looks like Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora was having a tough time competing with his daughter's cell phone.

Richie and his daughter spent some quality father-daughter time courtside at the Lakers game Tuesday night where they were snapped by the paps. My take on the photo is that Richie is thinking: 'she's growing up so fast, sniffle.'

I can't really tell whether she taking a photo here or just trying to get the glare off of here screen here, but she seems to be pretty sucked in to the digital world. I'm sure most parents feel that this is a perfect Norman Rockwell-esque slice of life subject for parenting in 2009.

11-year-old Ava is Richie's daughter with ex-wife and super-babe Heather Locklear who've been officially separated since 2007.

New Graffiti Law May Make Parents Pay

Hide those markers, spray cans and Sharpies. If a decision is passed in Los Angeles, parents there could be financially responsible for their kids rebellious tagging and attempts at street ‘art’. Under this new proposed law, mom and dad would be cited for vandalism and have to pay a fine along with being sent to parenting class. The money paid by the parents would go to help clean and repair the property that had been damaged by the graffiti.

But this proposal isn’t unwarranted. Los Angeles pays more than $7 million a year to clean up graffiti at about 675,000 locations across the city. In the City of Industry the cops launched an anti-graffiti sweep to try to catch members of two of the main ‘tagging teams’. In the sting, ten juveniles and two adults were arrested. The decision on the law will take place on May 20th.

Boy With Toy Gun Shot By Deputy

You hear about things like this happening from time to time but you always hope it will stop. But it doesn't.

A boy was "playing cops and robbers" in Palmdale, California when he was shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy. He is now in the hospital in stable condition.

The police were responding to complaints from neighbors that someone was "riding a bicycle and brandishing a handgun." Deputies arrived on the scene, told the kid to drop the gun, and he pointed it at them instead. According to the report, the boy is 15, which seems a little old for that sort of behavior.

This quote, from sheriff's spokesman Deputy Ed Hernandez, is disturbing: "The deputies, fearing for their lives, shot him once. Later on, they determined it was a juvenile playing cops and robbers." I'm not blaming the police, especially since if the boy was really 15, he should know better. But the idea that a kid can have a gun that looks enough like a real one (the photo above is of a toy gun you can buy at Amazon.com) for a trained police officer to fear for their life...

Despite reports that the Beckhams we're ready to pack up their junk and blow this popsicle stand, Victoria says they're staying Stateside because LA is "home."

Over the last few weeks, rumor had the Beckham clan making tracks to Milan, where they'd supposedly placed a bid on a historic Venetian palace. But according to Victoria, it's all a pack of lies.

“There’s no truth to that whatsoever. So many people have been coming up to me saying, ‘I hear you’re moving…’ but we’re not - we’re staying in LA. It has been great for David being in Milan, and we’ve all enjoyed spending time there - I’m going over there in a couple of days to see him. He’s coming back to the States in June, though - he has his first game in New York on the 16th of July, which he is very excited about.”

“You know, LA is our home and the boys are happy. We’re not looking for a house in Milan - I don’t know where that story came from. The last thing I want is another house!”

It's nice that the Posh and Becks are taking the boys' (Brooklyn, 10, Romeo, 6, and Cruz,4) feelings into consideration. My family moved around a lot when I was growing up, and though it was good for me, I hated it.

Rumors about the Beckhams leaving the US have been circulating pretty mcuh since they first arrived. Still, with a jet-setting couple like Posh and Becks, you have to assume that one of these days the rumors will be true.
