They Say: Pool Water's Toxic for Baby

Nobody wants to think of their kids taking in sips full of toxic water. But a new study says all the disinfectants we've been using to keep our drinking and swimming water clean may be doing just the opposite.

The ten-year study funded by the Environmental Protection Agency found that disinfectants mixing with organic matter in our water to create "disinfectant by-products" (DBP) with some pretty risky consequences.

"Some of these are toxic, some can cause birth defects, some are genotoxic, which damage DNA, and some we know are also carcinogenic," geneticist Michael Plewa said in HSDailyWire.com.

The scary part, as we head into summer, is the significant amount of DBPs found in swimming pools, where Plewa says body hair, urine (we all know kids pee in the pool) and other bits of human mix with the disinfectants in the pool. Because poolwater is generally recycled, Plewa says the concentration of DBPs in a swimming pool is tenfold what it is in drinking water. And babies, whose parents love to take them into the pool to escape the summer heat, are more susceptible than any of us to the damaging affects of DBPs.

So what can you do? Stay out of public pools - where people are doing all kinds of nasty. Stick your kids in fresh disinfectant-free water in a baby wading pool (and keep a VERY close eye on them), and wait until scientists come up with some new wonder product. . . which they'll find out twenty years down the line also causes cancer, but hey, what we don't know won't kills us. Right?

Designer Baby Born Without Cancer Gene

Pop quiz: you have a history of cancer in your family. You want to have children. Science has progressed to the point where you can alter your unborn child's genetics so that they will be born without the particular gene that causes the particular type of cancer in your bloodline. What do you do?

This is no longer a hypothetical question. A baby girl was just born in Britain without the defective BRCA1 gene, which causes cancer in 50 to 85 percent of girls, according to London's Daily Mail. That gene is rampant in this particular London family, who wisely chose to remain anonymous. (No reality TV show for those two.)

When the unborn are mucked with, controversy follows. Various Pro-Life/Anti-Choice advocates, such as James Dowson of LifeLeague, are against the practice, calling it a "slippery slope…It is designer babies. Screening for cancer is an emotive issue - my own father and grandfather both had cancer, so I know - but it is a dangerous road to go down. Today it is cancer, next year it will be IQ, and the year after that blue eyes and blonde hair."

I don't like the term "designer baby". It sounds like something you create in a lab. But isn't that what doctors are doing? I realize that I'm not offering a good analysis of the science involved here. The Daily Mail article is decent, and there is lots of information online if you want to read up on it. I'm going to stick with the more parenting-related issues that come up with this story.

I'm somewhat ambivalent about the idea of genetic screening, and even more hesitant to agree with genetic manipulation. Although I'm not a scientist (I even graduated college without passing a single science class, for what that's worth) I feel strongly that doctors can't possibly know what the long-term effects are of adding and removing genes from anyone, in utero or fully-grown. Like most Jewish parents, my wife and I went through the genetic screening process when she was pregnant, but declined to know all of the information that they found. It's one thing to check and see if you are a carrier for a horrible and incurable disease such as Tay-Sachs. It's something else to find out what the chances are that your child will contract various types of cancers. We decided that we'd rather not know.

And therein lies the core of the issue – choice. If a technique is available and medically possible, it shouldn't be up to me or anyone else to decide whether or not it can be used.

My ambivalence comes from the idea of trying to create a baby with traits that you pick off of a menu of human characteristics – "I'll have the blue eyes with a hint of hazel, and a boy with a strong right leg so he can grow up to be an NFL punter like Jeff Feagles." (Hey, Jeff Feagles is one of the best punters in football. And punters can play longer than any other position in the game because they don't get hit much.) This may sound silly, but I've read enough comic books and seen enough movies to know that messing around with genetics rarely ends well. Eventually some lunatic – Hitler, perhaps – decides to create a Master Race of Super Soldiers and starts World War III. Hm, maybe it's not just a comic book thing.

As with abortion, this is a religious issue. Conservative British politician Ann Widdecombe said, "'A lot of embryos have genes in them that could lead to nothing but them turning into perfectly healthy humans. Once again this shows a worrying precedent that man wants to play God."

This is the argument that nobody ever makes when it comes to the death penalty. But that's a different story.

What do you think? Is this just another issue of personal choice and women's reproductive freedom? Or is it more dangerous? And even if it is more dangerous, does anyone have the right to tell someone not to do it?

Looks like great news for former Big Brother star Jade Goody: her chemotherapy sessions seem to be working. Jade was diagnosed with cervical cancer last summer.

"I do have good news," she says, "I was told my cancer cells have shrunk a little, which means the chemo is working. But it's too soon to say if I have a better chance of survival."

Jade, 27, had an operation last week for a blocked kidney. "Once every month, for the next 12 months, I have to have two types of chemo drugs pumped into me through a tube. It takes 5 hours altogether. It doesn't hurt, but it makes me feel really sick afterwards."

The worst part is her appetite. "I get hungry," Jade says, "but everything I eat tastes like metal and I throw it up. I'm sick three times a day and it's going to get worse."

It's just being reported that Big Brother UK star Jade Goody is having an operation today to fix a blocked kidney. It started before Christmas...Jade, battle cervical cancer, started feeling rather unwell after a chemo session.

"I was really down on my chemo day and in a lot of pain," she says. "My doctors decided to keep me in hospital. I had a blockage around my kidney."

She faced "flu-like symptoms and couldn't continue with her panto role as the Wicked Witch in 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.'" After a few tests, doctors said that Jade, 27, needed the emergency procedure.

Jade's agent says, "We are hoping she can come out of hospital again quickly." Jade has 2 sons - Bobby, 5, and Freddie, 4.

Here's hoping everything goes great for Jade.

Jade Goody Responding Well to Cancer Treatment

Doctors say that Jade Goody, former star of "Big Brother" in the UK, is responding well to her latest cancer treatment. They're quite pleased with her progress, especially considering that she suffered complications after her first round of treatments. At one point, Jade (27) had an 8-hour hysterectomy and was given a 50/50 chance of surviving her cervical cancer.

Jade, mom of sons Freddie (4) and Bobby (5) is taking a second break from treatment and is currently appearing in panto with Kevin Kennedy in Lincoln. She told friends that she's feeling better and happier.

Great news for the hoidays, that's for sure!

Jade Goody is growing up fast and facing issues that no one should have to face. She is only 27, has two young boys, and a 50-50 chance to live. Sadly, her cervical cancer metastasized to her stomach lining, and her doctor warned, "That her chances of survival aren't good."

With that in mind Jade has begun to make plans for her funeral saying, “I’d want to have an open funeral and let everyone who wanted to come along. I want people to cry over me! And I don’t want people to have a booze up.”
She also has to decide who will take care of her sons Bobby and Freddie. Her doctor warned her that her chances of survival aren't good so she has to start think about more unpleasant things. She said, "The only person good enough for my kids is me."
Could you imagine having to decide that? I cannot. I know it's one of those things that we all need to take care of and that having a living will is a really good idea, but it's too scary.

She's is going through all of this alone because her on again/off again boyfriend Jack, is in jail.

Jade Goody's lawyers are now trying to shut down a really sick website, which is taking bets on when Jade will die. Jade, 27, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in September and recently underwent a full hysterectomy in an effort to halt the cancer's spread.

Now there's a web site - whenwilljadegoodydie.com - that is not only creating a pool of bets on when Goody will die, but really slamming her. Here is some of the shit they're saying:

"Jade Goody started out as a loud mouth nobody and after her appearances on Big Brother UK and their Big Brother Celebrity Special she is still a loud mouth nobody. And that is exactly the reason for this site. Jade Goody has done nothing and we mean nothing to enhance life on this planet. She fills the tabloid pages with crap about herself.

"She’s an egotistical twat who can’t have a normal relationship as it would mean she’d have to share herself with somebody else than herself. And yet the tabloids still give her their newspaper inches while they should be giving her 10 inches of red hot steel up her ass. She bullied and made racist remarks to a fellow Big Brother Celebrity contestant and was puked upon by the UK and India.

"To give her shit covered star a new shine she recently went over to India to participate in their version of Big Brother (presented by the person she bullied and discriminated against). While in the house Jade Goody got the news she was diagnosed with cancer. Aweful news really. For anyone. Even Jade Goody. But Jade Goody’s bad news turned into a tabloid marathon of Jade bullshit.

"Jade Goody made it seem as she is and will ever be the only person to get the Big C. Wake up and smell the shit stained blankets Jade. You’re not special. You’re not the Chosen One. Cancer hits millions of people everywhere and those millions of people deal with it in dignity and not by talking crap and getting their sobbing faces into the newspaper day after day. If you wanted our sympathy you could have promoted cancer charities instead of yourself while enduring your disease. Classy, very classy. What a bunch of assholes. Also on the front page is a form where you can enter your email address and the date and time of Jade's predicted death. Whoever gets closest to Jade's actual date and time of death wins an iPhone. Nice.

Jade's spokesman says, "Naturally, she was shocked and hurt when she found out about this website. But she has also been overwhelmed by the amount of letters, cards, and messages of good will she has received from the public."

Listen, cancer is not a fucking joke. No matter what you think of Jade - and yeah, she's screwed up big time in the past - you don't wish death on anyone. And if there's ever a time to be self-centered, it's when you get a cancer diagnosis, particularly when you have kids depending upon you.

I'm not sure if lawyers can get that site shut down. For one thing, it's in Holland. For another, shitty as it is, I can't imagine the jerks running the site are breaking any laws. But if they have an ounce of decency in them, they'll voluntarily pull the damn thing.

Jady Goody took her boys, Bobby and Freddie, to school yesterday. Goody, 27 and a reality TV star, is fighting cervical cancer. I'm sure the boys are happy to see their mum home. I know it's a scary thing for your parents to be sick.

Jade is due back to the hospital this week, actually, for another operation. After her hysterectomy a couple of weeks ago, she'll be going in to have a catheter inserted into her chest to get her ready for chemotherapy. But at least she's home again.

We're all wishing her the best and a speedy recovery.

Reality TV star Jade Goody checked out of the Royal Marsden Hospital after a radical hysterectomy. She's been in the hospital for two weeks and the surgery was to help treat her cervical cancer. Goody was on the U.K. version of "Big Brother" and also starred in the Indian version, where she was told she had cervical cancer after a few days in the Big Brother house. Looks like Goody, mother of two, is finally headed home.

Godspeed, Jade. We're all pulling for you.

Big Brother star Jade Goody is in the fight of her life - for her life. The 27-year-old, mother of two, recently underwent an eight-hour hysterectomy to remove her cervical cancer. However, the operation didn't yield good news - her cancer has spread and her recovery odds have dropped significantly.

Jade said before her operation, "I will fight the damn thing every step of the way. At the end of the day I am going to bloody beat this thing because I've got two amazing kids to live for. And there's no way I'm gonna let them down."

Doctors discovered that the cancer has spread and is now "Stage Three" - they found cancer cells in a muscle behind her womb. Initially, her odds of recovery were put at 95 per cent, but now, unfortunately, those odds are now just above 50 per cent.

Goody will now be put through an intense, nine-week course of radiotherapy and chemotherapy to hopefully eliminate all cancer cells. Jade is recovering at London's Royal Marsden Hospital's intensive care unit.

We wish her all the best and a full recovery. Those boys need their mom!
