    Kids will be kids

Tell us your most humbling parenting experience.

    Foul-mouthed toddler

Perhaps not humbling, but definitely humiliating.....

When my son was just starting to speak we had a traffic incident where some choice words spilled out of my husband's mouth. My son, at the time, seemed oblivious. However, the next day while shopping in a very crowded store, my son spied a toy that he desperately wanted. He first said "car" and I said, yes, it's a very nice car, but you have lots at home and we don't need any more. To which he responded, F@#k! Car! F%$! Car!

It seemed like the entire store went silent and they were all staring at me and my little cherub with the dirty mouth. I quickly picked up the car and said very loudly, "Yes, darling, Frog, I see the Frog too, next to the car."

Well, I only have 4 months' experience so far, but at Jillian's baby-naming ceremony, the rabbi was giving her blessing and she decided that would be the ideal time to poop.  And I don't know why this is, but she poops in a very noisy way, so it wasn't like we could just ignore it.  Everyone kind of laughed and I just shrugged and said she takes after her father.

    Re: Kids will be kids

The three of us were sitting on the edge of a fountain in at the National Arboretum that is completely flush with the ground, not even a bump to separate it.  Porter was on one side of me, Miles on the other.  I saw Miles start to lean forward, so I turned to reach out to grab him.  Of course, as soon as I turned, Porter unintentionally dove in.

About a month later, I was at another fountain with my lads, their best friend/accomplice, and my best parent-friend.  She left her son under my care for one lil' minute while she went to retrieve something, and he confidently took a Chauncy Gardiner-like step out onto the surface of the water.  Splash.

I like to think of it as baptizing children into my style of parenting.

Here's one that happened just the other day:

Child: No Mommy, I don't have a poopie diaper.

Mother: Yes, you do I can smell something. Can I change you?

    Child: No Mommy.

Mother convinces/strong-arms child to the changing mat. Diaper is removed, no poopie. While mother is grabbing a clean diaper, child stands up and poops on carpet.

Child: Mommy, I made poopie outside diaper.
