When do you know it's the right time to move your young toddler from their crib to a toddler bed? Is there a particular age that it should happen by?

 

We moved our little one to a regular bed at 2.5.  We used double side rails and for a long time he still acted like he was in a crib.  He never got out of bed himself.  He always called for us to come and get him.  It was much easier than I had anticipated.  My cousin, on the other hand waited until her little one was 3 and a half.  She had a very difficult time.  Her daughter was very attached to her crib and resented that the new baby was now sleeping in it.  In my limited experience, moving my baby at a younger age worked well!

We had to do something for our son at 1 year of age.  He could actually get out of his crib and it was a saftey issue.  I bought one of the cribs that converts to the toddler bed so we were able to modify the situation.  We took one whole side off ( our crib didn't have a drop rail, but it was that side we removed), and pulled the crib up alongside our bed into what they call a side car postion.  He loved it, and so do we.
