    High Altitude with toddler

We are planning an overland trip from Shanghai to Lhasa in Tibet with our daughter who will be 14 months old at the time. We're getting concerned about altitude sickness as Lhasa is at an elevation of 13,000 feet. Does anyone have experience taking children up to that elevation? We'll be traveling by train, so she'll have three days to go from 1260ft to 13,000ft. We'll only be in Lhasa a few days before moving on to Katmandu (4500ft) if that makes a difference. Thanks for any advice in advance!

I haven't travelled that high, but I have lived at 10,000 ft with kids. When on a "short" trip, you bet the altitude will affect her and from what I know , pushing fluids while there and upping her iron intake before the trip are important. Make sure you know all the symptoms of altitude sickness are prepared to descend ASAP if she has symptoms. Hoep that helps a little!

Thanks for your reply! I did some further research and found out that the train actually goes through some much higher mountain passes than we originally thought. Access to medical treatment is limited in Tibet, so we decided to eliminate this segment of our trip. We'll have to do the train journey when she gets a bit older.
