I really dislike almost everything I've seen. Registered at Buy Buy Baby yesterday and couldn't stand a single set they had. Not interested in a 25-piece set with a friggin' valance. Really just a bumper and skirt and then I'll mix and match beyond that. I also don't feel like I should have to spend $500 for this. Sheesh.

have you looked at Ikea for cuter stuff? I'm always pretty pleased with their grown-up bedding. Or if you sew (or know someone who does), you could get fabric at a fabric store or online - there's all
kinds of crazy awesome japanese fabrics at places like superbuzzy.com. Also, try etsy.com, I just did a search for "baby bedding" and it looked pretty promising...

I had a hard time finding bedding when we found out we were having a boy. After looking everywhere, and eventually deciding ultra-mod was too adult for a baby's room, I ended up with a set from landofnod.com. They have great accessories, too, I got the rug they featured with the bedding I bought, and I love that the colors are all over the spectrum, so everything kind of matches. They have free swatches as well.

I understand your frustration!  I found a nice, gender-neutral set at www.babysupermall.com.  They had a larger selection than the typical baby stores, and the sets were less expensive too.  Good Luck!

i ordered fabric from www.contemporarycloth.com and had drapes, bumpers and a small pillow sewn by a local seamstress.  they have lots of modern and cool fabrics.  Also Nurseryworks just partnered with a new company and has a great line of bedding.

I was going to recommend the same.  IKEA has affordable fabrics and contemporary designs...

We didn't get bumpers and all that stuff... we just got crib sheets (some of them red) that coordinated with the wallpaper and borders (a pond theme with many colors), and that works fine.  I think they came from Target, Meijer, Wal-Mart and Babies R Us. Our little girl sleeps all over the crib, and I always thought bumpers seemed kind of claustrophobic. To be honest, I don't think she's ever cared...   ;)   Besides,without bumpers and skirts, our crib's natural wood really looks good.

Don't buy a whole bunch of crap that you're "supposed" to buy!  ;)  Well, you will anyway.

 

 

It all depends what you want. If you look closely enought you still can find some quality bedding and nursery products for reasonable prices. Check out http://www.spiffybaby.com/Nursery-Bedding-p-1-c-45.html. They have wonderful selection normally priced bedding. We bought Sozo set (Koi) bedding for our son - he loves it. Of course initially we cheaped out and went for a winnie the pouh or something for $60. Nothing to compare let me tell you. check them out.

I don't know why we're expected to spend so much on bedding sets for babies, anyway; they're not supposed to have the quilts on them anyway (because of the risk of suffocation) or even the bumper pads when they start rolling over/ are able to use them to climb out of the crib.

We got everything used. Granted, we've never had a really cohesive decor plan for Simon's room, but I found great crib sheets in primary colours, polka dots, gingham fabrics, solids... He doesn't seem to mind the variety, and I could afford to get a ton of spare wheets for my "heavy wetter".

The only bedding that we've purchased is 2 white sheets and with that we received countless blankets as gifts. My wee one is nine months old now and just starting to use blankets. So in all I spent $12 and our nursery still looks good! Minimalist but good. I can change whatever I want in it and not have to worry about matching a $200+ bedding set that will only last about 2 years.

You should take a look at super natural baby : they screen print these killah' styles on really clean bumpers and quilts with off set sheets : best part the bumper ties together to make a floor mat when your baby is standing up and its unsafe to keep a bumper in ... and as we all know : then the bumper goes in storage : and is a waste. but now you can keep using it as a funky, comfy floor mat.  Save yourself the money and don't buy the bumper pads at all; they are actually not recommended for use at any age (see first link). We got cute sheets to match a skirt and small rug but ended up buying plain flannel sheets later as they are warmer and softer. I also highly recommend a sleeping bag instead of sheets or quilts which should also be verboten in baby's crib. We like the grobag; a little more expensive, but excellent quality and well thought-out design.

I know that a lot of places are offering more "modern" and more affordable bedding sets.  JJ Cole Collections just came out with a new line of bedding.  There are 6 colorways in their assortment and you can also by extra fitted sheets.  Reasonably priced at $199, it's good quality, which for me is a big issue.  I don't want my crib bedding to look 3 years old after one washing or a month of use.

We, too, had issues finding the perfect modern bedding for us. It's hard to find black and white bedding for babies ... black anything for babies. We finally found a fabulous designer, and basically had everything custom made.

I don't know if you like Petunia Pickle Bottom, but this season's crib bedding that is actually really cute. I particularly like this koi design: http://www.petuniapicklebottom.com/collections/fawn/bedding/imperialfish/. You could really do a cute Asian theme around this bedding ... and it wouldn't be too girly or too dated.

I also second the poster who said that JJ Cole has some nice, inexepensive crib sets. Not ultra-modern but different from all of the mainstream lines.
