    Re: Poll: Circumcision

They might not be complaining because they don't know what they are missing! They have had the most sensitive part of their penis cut off.  Circumcision was started to eliminate masturbation and make sex less enjoyable. It is genital mutilation, and it is so awful. When we do it to infants we take away their autonomy over their bodies. Your son may start complaining when he realizes sex will never be as enjoyable for him as it should be, and that you mutilated his body for no real reason. It is just so sad that there is even a discussion, that this procedure actually still occurs.

it's kind of funny that you had such a horrifying experience, and at the end you say, if it is required by your religion, then that's o.k.  people have been fighting wars for thousands of years with that  thought process.

Just an FYI - infant circumcision does not have to be performed like that. We are Jewish and are about to have our 2nd son. Our 1st son's circumcision took place at our home, where he was cradled in his grandfather's arms while his dad and the mohel (ritual circumciser) performed the procedure that took all of a minute. We had put some numbing cream on him before hand, ahd he cried a little during the process, but after I was able to take him straight up to his room and in all of 10 minutes he was fine. We subsequently have had non-Jewish friends who have chosen to have their boys circumcised by the same person, because of how harsh a hospital circumcision is, all with most satisfying results. Please just know that there are other options...

***It seems clear to me that labeling circumcision as genital mutiliation does more to distract attention from the clitorectomies and TRUE genital mutilation that is ongoing in Africa and other less developed countries.***

so it is ok to mutilate the genitals of boys, but not girls?

    Re: Poll: Circumcision

My wife is a pediatric nurse and has seen many cases of children who lacked the skills and/or training to care for themselves properly and have ended up with bad infections.  There was also a case where someone's foreskin sealed over the top of the penis and a circumcision had to be performed anyway.

It is a touchy subject.  There are strong and valid cases on either side.  I'm glad I have a girl!
