Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Quick question... when everyone is talking about effexor is that effexor xr or just the regular kind?

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
If the birth mother was giving up her child to adoption, I have a feeling she may have been on more than just Effexor. Seizures are seen in infants withdrawing from many other meds combined or even street drugs. Sometimes, infants with fetal alcohol syndrome go through seizures. Did she tell you how much she drank during pregnancy? It can't just be Effexor.
It's possible she didn't take the Effexor properly.

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Hi everyone,
I too am interested in hearing from more people who were on high doses of Effexor XL. I am on 300mg daily. We are interested in adding to our family - our daughter is 6 years old, am I am finally lending to the idea of going through it all again...!!
I am concerned about my high dosage though because I have tried to reduce this, under doc's supervision, but I ended up in hospital on a drip and morphine because a bummer of a migrane! Don't know if I want to go through this everytime I reduce my meds, so I am probably more likely to stay on the 300mg daily.
Any suggestions, viewpoints and personal experiences greatly appreciated!
Thanks, KF

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
I am two weeks off effexor, in which I did wean off myself off earlier this month. Although I love my life and want this baby that I am now pregnant with, I can not seem to control my anger. Life at home has become awful and I feel like my once loved co-workers are starting to really not care for me. I dont really care for myself. I feel like I am becoming a bad mother to my 2 yr old daughter, and I am afread that only being 8 wks pregnant things are only getting worse.

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
My OB/GYN told me to wean myself off of Effexor. I did this, without supervision, and let me tell you--it was the worst experience of my life. Aside from the physical side effects (nausea, "electric" shocks, dizziness) I have never been more depressed and angry. I have since seen a psychiatrist, who says that I NEVER should have been told to wean myself off. I highly recommend weaning ONLY under the supervision of a doctor/psychiatrist.

Why do wome with psychological problems to the extent that they need to be medicated to function reproduce? As a nurse I know that often these psychological afflictions are passed to the offspring. The offspring will likely have your psychological problems. I just dont understand it at all.

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Dear all,
i'm writing from a country much away from yours, but problems are the same worldwide!
i'm on Seroxat (Paxil-Paroxetine) for 4 years now, 15 mg. All efforts to go off it had very very bad relapse. Go off pills is not an option for me.
Im 32 and planning to get pregnant in one year or two.
I would be MUCH grateful if i read your opinions on which medication is less harmful for baby during pregnancy & breastfeeding. It seems that Effexor is the best choice. Only i'm too afraid to change, since seroxat has really been working perfectly for me.
So, could you please inform me about Seroxat, Seropram, Effexor and Zoloft, on the matter in discussion? And, what about your experience on switching kind of medication?
Thanx a lotlotlot!!

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Kyrandia,
It was a blessing for me to read your post. I am currently 6.5 months pregnant, age 36, and on 150 mg.'s of effexor. I cut down to 75 mg. during the first trimester and needed to go back up (because of constant crying, major anxieties, etc.). I spoke with a teratologist throughout my trying-to-conceive + pregnancy process, and she assures me that studies show taking effexor during pregnancy does not increase the risk of malformations. My question to you is: have you heard any news about how it may impact on cognitive, motor, and language development? How is your own baby doing at this point? I hope all is well, and from your post, it sounds like she is a beautiful, healthy baby. I just started freaking out with the reality of my upcoming birth. Any info you have would be appreciated. Thanks!
Shari

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Hi, my name is Heather. I just found out that I am pregnant with my second child. I am on 150mg of effexor XR daily. My daughter is 13 months old and I suffered from severe PPD with her. I am very scared of going off this medicine but at the same time I am also worried that my baby will have severe withdrawl symptoms if I don't. Has anyone had a baby while taking effexor? If so did your baby go through any withdrawl symptoms and if so what were they?

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Hi, my name is Roberta. I was told by mother risk to increasse my dosage as I was having trouble in my first 3 months. I was depressed and very anxious. So, I listened to the doctor, mother risk and took 150 ml the whole way through. Now, my baby is very sleepy, jaundice and not eating as much as he should. I tried to go off at 1 month as the doctor told me to go off cold turkey..I was a mess. Very intense withdrawl effects. thats why they increased. I should have known that 150 ml would be worse. I feel like its all my fault. This child is the love of my life. I cant bare to be feel I have created my poor baby tio suffer like this. I trusted the doctors..
Any advice?

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Hi, I was on 150ml the whole time. baby is 6 days old, he is lathargic, jaundice and not eating well due to this. I was told by mother risk and doctors to stay on. They did say there might be side effects. The said the baby might need to be held more..My baby is sick right now and i am blaming myself over and beyond. I wish I had the right advice from the getgo. My baby means the world to me, this is breaking my heart that he's going through this.
Any thoughts?

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
Roberta-
Hi, I am on 150 mg.'s of Effexor currently, nearing my 7th month. The only thing I can say is that it would be worse overall for me to go off it. As far as the side effects your baby is experiencing, I reckon it will be temporary and your baby will improve. I understand you feel your baby is 'sick', but the lethargy sounds like one of those common side effects which fades away. In fact, I just read an earlier post from a woman whose baby did experience lethargy at first, but is now a bright, happy 2 year old. Take heart. I wish him (her?) and your family health and happiness always. All the best.

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
I took effexor 75mg a day during my last pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding for 10 months my daughter is perfect and never had any ill effects. I was told many contradicting facts during my pregnancy and the stress from worrying about the possible effects made me ill and this I feel is more harmful to baby, I am 13 weeks pregnant with my second child and have remained on my medication again baby is fine, a healthy mum = a healthy baby.

Re: Anti-depressant, effexor during pregnancy
I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant and on 225 of effexor xr. My therepist wants to take me off of it around week 35 so as to avoid any withdrawn symptoms for the baby which is due Aug. 15. I am concerened about the withdraw symptoms I'm going to have during the process, I'm very afraid to change anything because I've been suffering from depression during the past couple of weeks badly and crying nonstop. I've had to take a leave of absence from work. My husband and I were trying for this child so I don't really understand why I'm so depressed but that's how depression and anxiety work. I want my son to be the healthiest he can be so I'm just confused as to what to do. How is your son now? If he's better how long did he suffer? Any information back would be greatly appreciated. email mdhall08@bellsouth.net
