    Re: Welcome!

Hey, folks! Allison Wonder here- not my real name, but it suits me better. I'm a full-time mom, part-time thrift store employee and unmotivated housekeeper- I'll try harder when I get a raise. I'm a Mommy by way of my 20-month old son, Simon, and I've been married to his dad for 4 years (usually happily). We live in St. John's, Newfoundland, a beautiful city on the very eastern edge of North America.

I'm glad to have found this community, and though I suffer from severe popular-blog envy, I'm reading those that are here. The articles and features look great so far... but I can't afford anything that the advertisers are offering. Custom bedding for babies looks nice and all, but we're doing fine with the 99 cent used jobbies I bring home from work. Am I bitter? Not really. We're happy, and momey doesn't make the mom. I love my family, and though I'm not as crunchy-granola as I'd like to be, I'm a great mom. We love, we laugh, we learn, we have fun, and that's about as good as it gets!

I hope I'm doing this right...getting oriented here.   I'm Katie, mom to Liam (almost 3) and Jonah (6 months).  I teach English part-time at night at a local community college (I'm in SoCA) so I can be at home with my boys during the day.  I'm married to my teacher husband, who retired as a full-time touring musician just last year.  I heard about this website from a Bitch magazine article, which outs me as a feminist.  I love collecting vintage stuff, knitting (badly), learning to sew, reading, going to go see the bands that I love, drinking good wine...etc.  I'm a breastfeeding (child guided), cloth-diapering, babyfood-making, working, red-lipstick-wearing, tattooed, rockin' momma to two rockin' boys.  That's me!

    Re: Welcome!

Good day! I am...well, I don't really know what I am. I am a mom of one 6 m.o. dd whom I love dearly. I am a SAHM/WAHM, struggling to stay that way while my husband works to support us. I wear my baby frequently-any time I am out and about, breast feed exclusively, eat "right" depending on your definition, and dabble in cloth diapering.

I've started making clothes for my DD as well as nursing tops for myself and many different carriers for when I am out and about with her. I am finding that if I want it, I can design it and make it.

I try to keep an open mind, but do find my ingrained prejudices do seep out at times...then I find or read something that jolts me back to reality and the way things are and should be. I recently participated in the nurse-in, something I thought I would never participate in, but feel so strongly in doing what is right for our babies and their futures that I NEEDED to participate.

I look forward to reading and learning from others on this site!

Hi I'm Carly from MN. I've had 2 miscarriages and one perfect baby boy. Okay, he's almost 2, but they're always your baby, right? I'm in the very early stages of my 4th pregnancy, and hope this one is a keeper, too. Umm, I can't think of anything else. So. . . Hi!

    Re: Welcome!

Hi everyone! I am Karen from northern California, in the beautiful Sonoma County wine country! I am wife to Greg, and Mom to Fallon who is 13, Alia who is 10 and Terry (TJ) who is 3.5. Had a hyster this past summer so we are done (boohoo) but it is an amazing journey, especially now having a younger alongside preteen/teens. You really start seeing the fruits of your labors when they hit 10 or so! I am proud of who they are becoming.

I have a home based business selling beautiful fairy tale felt boards and other felt things for a direct sales company (fun story time home parties!) and have been doing that for 9 years. I keep busy leading my team of 260+ consultants and marketing my business online and off. I am involved in several local groups for networking, friendship, fellowship and love meeting new like-minded moms. I am a teacher by "trade" but not teaching this year. It just doesn't make sense when I can make the same amount working from home and spending more time with my son. Till this year I was teaching 1 day a week which seems ideal but got to be a real drain on my time so I have put that "career" on hold until I need it again.

We are a camping family and enjoy all sorts of outdoor adventures. We've graduated from tent camping to pop up tent camping and just recently got a regular trailer which doesn't much feel like camping any more but it sure is nice to be able to keep going out in the Fall/Winter. We mostly camp around California but have ventured into OR, WA, NV and UT.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here. I can't believe I just found this place, it is awesome!

    Re: Welcome!

I'm Wendy and I just regained custody of my 15yo daughter and (surprise! HER baby!) in May. So I am in the unusual position of parenting a teen and co-parenting an infant. At home I am mom, dad, and "grammy" all in one. I also work full-time, though I do have the world's greatest boss and an enviably flexible schedule. I have never been married, so I have always been sort of a non-traditional parent.....I found this site looking for advice on colicky babies, and love the blogs and articles. I would love advice from anyone about how to keep the balance between parenting my daughter and helping her to also be the best parent she can be.  She is really remarkable for her age; she is still breastfeeding at 5+ months and attends an alternative school full-time, but there are also days when she is a typical, normal, somewhat surly teen.  I know I don't quite fit the demographic here, but I still hope I'm welcome (and I'm staying even if I'm not!).

    Re: Welcome!

Here's what worked for my darling daugter...

We started with Gripe Water, suggested by my midwife. It is holistic and settles unhappy tummies... When baby takes Gripe Water - momma/gmamma should take "Rescue Remedy" this helps with the anxiety of listening to a screaming baby... another wholistic approach. Both of these remedies can be found at a local health/natural food store - usually...it's where I found it.

The BIGGEST HELP for us was wearing our baby. wrap her/him on with a long piece of fabric, a pockte sling, a mei tai, whatever you can get hold of. I found that when I wore my DD for 3-4 hours a day things were much better in the evening. There is a theory that your system "trains" the new baby's system how to work correctly. It also allows for warmth, the baby hears your heart beat-which is calming, and soothes the baby and gives him/her that security that they crave after being forced through that little hole into the entirely new world where everything is different.

DD is now almost 8 months old. I still use rescue remedy for me when she has bouts of crying. and the Gripe water is valuable for those gassy times when her tummy is unsettled.

     Hope that helps.
    Tess

I am not condoning self medicating your child, I am only stating what worked for my child. By all means, please check with your own health proffessional before administering any drugs/remedies. :-)

    Re: Welcome!

Hi there, I'm freelance writer named Amy and I've got slightly older children--almost 6 and almost 9. I became a mom pretty young (well, younger than I meant to, by far) and that colors my whole parenting perspective. Plus, my third grader has asthma and struggled with her health mightily for a few years, and that definitely changed my perspective. I advocate for children's health and the environment as a result of those early years.

I live in Florida now but am moving sometime this spring. Also, I just realized my first post on this board was advice to a mom looking for RSV help a year ago.

I promise I'm not usually such an idiot, though.
