    Plastic or cloth?

I just responded to someone's post about which brand of disposable diapers to use. My little boy is 6 this year so it has been a while. But as I was typing I thought about what you new mom's think.. cloth or plastic? Reusable or disposable. Does anyone have an idea how many disposable diapers a child use in his/her little life? (That was really a question) And then - do we know how many chemicals are used to make these disposable diapers? Was any testing done on children to see what the chemical affect is? Or will you be using cloth diapers - going the organic route.. washing your diapers with something like that wierd Lullwater soap nuts - which coincidently really works. No suds. No chemicals but fashionable clean. mmm. Lullwater Soap Nuts or Tide? Plastic or cloth?

I know what I do now. But what do you think? Living the fast paced  life we all do lately, how are we leaving the world for our children? My kids always ate organic and still do to date? But how many diapers did I shoot over to the landfill?

    (C)onfused.

We use cloth, but also a diaper service.  It costs more than washing yourself, but about the same as disposables.  The service goes the organic route when laundering.  It is very convenient.  However, we do use disposables when we travel. Although we feel good about our decision, I'm seriously thinking about EC for baby #2.  It will be a little extra work at first, but ultimately I won't have to deal with diaper changes and it will make potty training much simpler. We'll see if I actually follow through with it once I have a newborn and a toddler.

EC stands for "Elimination Communication." I found the definition on Wikipedia is pretty accurate. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elimination_communication) Basically your baby goes without diapers and you learn to read their cues - just like you would for when your baby is hungry, tired, ect. You can try it without diapers altogether or a more moderated approach - maybe diapers when out in public as a "just in case" but not wearing them at home. I've had several friends who have had great success with it and might have done it with my first but didn't learn about it until after he was 6-months-old when it is supposed to be more difficult.
