Does anyone have concerns about domperidone?

I have been on domperidone for the past 2 weeks to increase my milk supply. I've been having trouble feeding since week 2 and last month I was producing almost no milk. Now, my DD is exclusively breast fed.

My question/concern is with the FDA warning against the use of this drug for breastfeeding purposes. They say that the effects on infants haven't been studied and they don't approve the drug for this purpose. My pediatrician also thinks I shouldn't use it long term and that I should decrease the dosage. I did, and saw a considerable decrease in milk supply as well as increase in fussiness from my DD.

Also, she has eczema, so the ped. suggests I breastfeed until she's 6 months. So Catch 22, right?

Has anyone used domperidone, or know the long term side effects on an infant?

I always  seem to have trouble after the 6th month breastfeeding.  Reglan is not recommended by the AAP for breastfeeding even though it is approved by the FDA.  The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) does approve domperidone for use with breastfeeding and the effects would be much less in an infant because it doesn't pass through the blood brain barrier like Reglan does.  The baby does get a small amount of domperidone but VERY little.  Domperidone has been used in Europe and Canada for over 20 years without any real reported problems.  If you look at the actual study that gave a concern for heart problems, they used the drug on cancer patients intravenously at much much higher doses.  If they did the study with reglan, I have had 2 compounding pharmacists tell me they would have found the same thing.  Anyways, my husband is a medical physician, I have used domperidone for 4 months with my first, 6 months with my second, and just began taking it to feed my 6 month old.  They actually use it to treat reflux in some infants at levels much greater than what your baby would get through nursing.

    Good Luck!
