Childcare/Neighborhoods Suggestions Needed! Moving to NYC with a Toddler (Considering it....)

    Hello to All,

I need all the New Yorkers on here to give me some advice.  I was born and raised (and still here) in Miami, Florida. I have a 24 month old daughter. I DESPERATELY want to get out of here and move to New York City to pursue a different career/lifestyle. Preferablly Brooklyn, but I would like advice as to which neighborhood would be best. A studio/1 bdrm would be sufficient for her & I, as I do have a budget. Basically, in a nutshell- what neighborhoods in Brooklyn should I look into (I would prefer "family-friendly"), and what is the average cost of childcare? Right now she is in a pre-school that has a toddler program that costs $600.00/monthly. Can anyone recommend a child care center? I know that the cost of living over there is probably the highest of any major city, but I really want to do this #1- because I have to atleast try and pursue a career in the fashion industry (and what better place to do it) #2- I am craving change like never before! :o)

Hi! There are several great neighborhoods in Brooklyn, including Park Slope and Cobble Hill. Go to www.craigslist.com and select New York to see what studio apartments go for in those neighborhoods. Most studio apartments in decent neighborhoods cost anywhere from $1100-$1700 per month. If you get a nanny, the average cost of childcare in NYC is $500 per week. If you go with a child care center, it is approximately $300 per week. Some of the franchise child care centers in New York that you can look up online include Preschool of America and Tutor Time. Privately owned preschools will average about $450 a week. When your daughter is 4, she will be able to attend public school for pre-k. Best of Luck!
