Wow mommyknows! She sounds more like a hindrance than a help. If I had behaved like that when I was a nanny I know I would have gotten the sack! (Didn't get nearly half the perks either!)

    Re: Childcare costs?

We live just outside Atlanta and have a nanny share with another family. Our babies are both less than 6 months old. All said and done our very experienced nanny gets $600 a week ($300 per family), 26 paid vacation and holidays, and 1 week's pay for a Christmas bonus. From what I understand this is middle of the road in costs. When we interviewed nannies we got requests in the range of $14 to $16 per hour for two children, but were able to give lots of paid vacation time to lower the per hour cost. It just depends on where you live. We were in daycare for a month. It was a Kids R' Kids chain daycare - very clean, web cams, 4 to 1 ratio. Our daughter hated it. She cried all day and they largely ignored her. We were paying $220 a week for that pleasure so a nanny is worth every penny to us!!

I live in Sydney Australia and my childcare centre charges $95/day. This is very normal for central Sydney. In Australia, the government subsidises childcare depending on family income. My daycare fees will be reduced by $15/day due to this.

Re: Childcare costs? - California, 40 miles south of San Francisco - $25 per hour +

We are located in California, 40 miles south of San Francisco. Our amazing nanny is paid $25 per hour (the growing rate - salaried with all benefits including vacations etc) on average a 30 / 35 hour week. She has worked for us for two years.  She is immensely experienced with exceptional standards of professionalism, dedicated to her role as a child care provider.

We have been completely happy with our nanny and our children adore her. However she is relocating in June, to return to university to study. We have already commenced the advertising / interviewing process and have not found anyone whom meets our standards.  She is excellent at taking care of our boys; warm, nurturing and playful.. She takes instructions well and is also willing to offer suggestions based on her many years of childcare experience. She is also absolutely reliable and safe. She has never missed a day of work or come to our house late and is scrupulously honest. We are really sorry to see her go; we shall all miss her immensely.

We have prior to our nanny independently sought / employed a au pair from England; which was also wonderful experience. I would like to add our nanny is just that - not a housekeeper or maid, we pay her to care for our children as a 'nanny' should. We do how ever also employ housekeeper. We are not a super wealthy family; however we correctly allocate our funds where it counts and to us 'good' childcare is high on the agenda.

    Re: Childcare costs?

Here in Kansas City, MO, the going rate for sitters is $8 - 12 an hour, depending on qualifications. I have no idea of nanny costs, but my daughter's daycare runs $210 wk for infants and decreases as they age, to $155 a week for preschool; discounts for multiple siblings. It's a church-run, fully accrediated Early Education Center. Most of the teachers have been there double-digit years. I have friends in nearby "richy" Kansas towns whose daycares run $320 a wk for infants. I feel lucky to have her in a place we trust that is not breaking the bank for us.

    Re: Childcare costs?

We live in the East Bay area of the San Francisco metro and have twin boys....the going rate seems to be $16 to $20 an hour, depending on the nanny's experience.  We are looking into a nanny share because we just cannot afford that!  But I want the boys at home, so we will make it work!

I don't think you should expect much of an increase with a second baby.  That is actually in my opinion what makes having a nanny a bonus over daycare if you have two or more kids.  Daycares don't normally give much discount for a second/third child, while the one price for a nanny usually will cover at least two kids or more with maybe a small incremental increase.

I haven't thought thru the bonus, etc.  We will give her paid vacation though.
