Abusive?  Seroiusly?  When my daughter turned 4 months she cried for 30-60 minutes everytime we attempted to put her to sleep (in our bed, and later in her crib) or whenever she woke up. This happened every night and nap FOR A MONTH WHILE I rocked her, nursed her, sang to her, swaddled her, etc.  She was exhausted and so were we!  We finally realized that she needed sleep a lot more than she needed to scream in my arms (or my husbands arms).  We started letting her cry herself to sleep and I have no regrets.  The first night required two 30 minute cries, the second night one 30 and one 15, the third night two 10 minute crying sessions, and then that was it - no more crying to sleep at night.  In other words, as soon as I started letting her cry, she started sleeping like a champ and she was so much happier during her awake times.  She actually still cries for naps - MUCH longer if we hold her and try to soothe her than if we just lay her down - and she always wakes up with a smile.  Are you honestly going to tell someone in this situaion that they abused their child?  You should refrain from lobbing a serious charge against people for something that you obviously don't understand.
