Anyone have any experiences with this? My 6mo old daughter's right duct has been clogged from the beginning, the doctor says it should resolve on it's own by 9mo. Has that actually been the case for anyone? Or did you have the procedure to unclog it, and if so what was it like?

i gently massaged near the ridge of his nose* almost every bath time , and one time i guess it finally worked... because the next day he had a big black booger come out, and it never came back! *(very gently!! with warm wet hands, massage halfway between the bony ridge and the inside corner of his eye.. try
it on yourself to feel where it "tickles" so you know what youre aiming
for) good luck!~

Both of my son's tear ducts were clogged from the time he was born. That really scared me for the first few weeks because he couldn't open his eyes fully and look at me.
When he was two weeks old, we had a visiting nurse come to the house. I expressed my concerns about his eyes to her. She suggested that I talk to the Doctor to make sure there was no infection in there and try massage on that area. She suggested to gently press under his eye. She said to start from the outerside of his eye and work your way inward. She said to do that every day at least twice a day.
I took her advice and three weeks later when I was massaging that area for him I felt a pop. The next day his right eye cleared up. I kept up the massage on the left eye and several weeks after that, the left eye cleared up.
Try the massage. It might work. Good luck. I hope this clears up for your baby soon.

My son had this. We did the massaging, did antibiotic drops. Kinda ignored it (per doctor's instructions), and one day his eye was suddenly fine, like it had not been red for months and months.

Oh, yeah, and the worst part ended up being all the baby pictures where he looks like a (losing) prize fighter.

We had this issue with both of our daughters. It resolved itself in my
youngest, but for my eldest we eventually had surgery on one of her
ducts. Although it was a simple procedure that only took a few hours of
outpatient surgery, it was still nerve wracking for us (the parents) as
you can imagine. But everything worked out beautifully and we never had
a problem again.

so the dr gave us a referal to an opthamologist and wouldn't you know it that as soon as i called to make the appointment her eye cleared up on its own the very same day, possibly while i was on the phone making the appointment. i'm happy her eye is finally clear and even happier that it happened with enough time to cancel the appointment without incurring charges. thanks for your advice everybody

Hi We did have the procedure done and it only lasted for 3-4 mos now he's really bad again constant eye drainage and infections. Now he wants to do a balloon inserton to open them.
My son will be 2 at the end of March so no they never cleared by themselves. We are trying to decide to have it done or not. I work at a hospital and have talked to a couple of Dr.s and they say do it, in the, long run he's still going to suffer if you dont do it.

My daughter is 6mo and we just went to the eye Dr. for her clogged tear duct. He informed us that the chances of it clearing on its own decreases after 6 mo and suggested surgery. I've done some research and everyone else seems to say the chances decrease after 1 yr. I'm so confused, I don't want my baby to have to go through surgery but the massage hasn't seemed to help. Do I wait?? Do I go ahead and get the surgery over with?? Any suggestions???

My daughter has had a clogged duct since birth and it never cleared, she is now 14 months old and we had the probing surgery 2 days ago. The surgery went really well for her with NO complications!!! Due to her clog she was very nasally and would choke on food and liquids and after every drink she would gasp for air. Immediatley after surgery it was a big difference, now on day 2 post-op, she has not choked or gasped at all. She is doing wonderful and was never phased by the surgery one bit. We will not know if this surgery was a complete sucess until next week when she goes to her follow up appt. As of now I can say I would make the same decision in a heart beat if I had to. If this does not take we will be looking into doing the next step procedure where they insert a catheter and balloon it open wider so it is less likely to close during the healing time. I have heard many horror story from friends who had the surgery done with their children, so I guess it all relates back to how good of a doctor you choose.
To answer your question, if it were me, I would have the surgery done as soon as possible for a much higher percentage of sucess. I wish I would have had her surgery done a lot sooner, but we tried to wait it out for it to fix on its own. As long as you find the best Pediatric Ophlamologist and a great hospital such as Children's your little one will not even know what went on and have great benefits from it. My daughter showed NO sign of any pain or discomfort at all. She was her normal playful self in about 1 -2 hours after surgery (when anethesia wore off). She had no bruising, swelling and (very) minimal blood drainage which is perfectly normal and only lasted about 24 hours. I really hope this helps you, I know how hard the decision is. Good Luck!

Son was born with blocked tear duct. Did the massages and warm compresses (I even tried accupunture on him). Never healed. At nine months finally was referred to specialist. He said if it hadn't cleared up by then we should schedule surgery. In the meantime, at my son's first appt. with the specialist, the doctor did the eye massage, but very aggressively and literally, my son's eye filled with yellow-green pus! The dr. said, "oh yeah, that's blocked alright!" It was gross! He also told us that more than likely, the duct would swell and seem clogged during colds and congestion going forward. Well, my son is now almost six and we've had no problems with the surgery (he had it at 10 mos). He's never had a recurrence during a cold or anything!! Couldn't be happier with the results!

My 13 1/2 month old son had the probing procedure done on Monday and we haven't seen a tear since. He hasn't had any complications and was back to his normal activities that same day. The procedure was quick - it was about 30 minutes from the time they took him back, to the time they called us in to see him. It was harder on us, I think, than him. We were unsure if the problem was affecting him enough to put him through the surgery, but now that it's over, we're happy we did it. No more fighting with him to wipe his eye!

has anyone used breastmilk to treat a clogged tear duct. i read it online and i tried it this morning. used a dropper and put a little bit in the clogged eye. seems there may be less of the green gunk as a result.

My son had a clogged tear duct from the day he was born, we batteled with it using every eye drop and gel we could find to help, we tried all the suggestion about massage and rubbing, some helped temporarily but mostly he got an eye infection about every three months like clock work. We finnaly got the surgery at 2 years old, they put him to sleep, went in with a hot wire and poked it open. It sounds worse than it is. He has a bloody nose for a day and was a little cranky. Now he is a totaly different child. He used to think it was a normal thing to poke people in the eye, that is what mommy and daddy did to him, but now he knows his eye feels better and he doesn't want anyone near it. His eye looks great!
