I don't know where you live, but if you're in a major city, there may be a diaper service, which is not as expensive as people think. We pay $16 a week for 70 diapers (seattlediaper.com). Not as expensive even as spendy Seventh Generation disposables. Don't feel guilty. What else can you do? Scrub diapers in your kitchen sink and air dry them? Like we don't have enough shit to think about...

Seventh generation diapers are chlorine-free and their absorbent materials – do not contribute to dioxin pollution. They have no latex, fragrance, or TBT (tributyl tin). They are the best disposable we have found...

I just want to put in a plug for the g-diapers.  They're environmentally friendly, super cute, and from my home town.  Only bummer: they totally plugged up our crappy Brooklyn toilet.  We tried "breaking them up" (you get a little shredding wand) into smaller and smaller pieces, flushing multiple times, and they still killed the toilet.  So sad.  I love them, and I totally recommend them to anyone who isn't living in 1982 Moscow conditions like we are.

I have to second the BumGenius Diapers. Totally amazing. They make the Seventh Generation disposables look like a joke in terms of shitsplosion containment. They seem super expensive but over the course of diapering a kid, you'll save hundreds of dollars and you'll be eco-friendly too. We love them to death.

Whole Foods has a store brand diaper, called WF365, and they are also chlorine-free, and super soft and absorbent.  I like them much more than 7th Generation, and they "contain" poop much better!  Also, they are (much) cheaper, and also made in the U.S. thus reducing the carbon footprint.  I used Nature's Baby, available at diapers.com and really liked them but they are expensive and made in Israel.
