    Children's Books About City Life

I'd like to start a list of quality children's books (i.e. no "Barney Goes To Roxbury" or "Thomas and Percy Break Down In Anacostia") that are about city life or in which the city plays a major role.  Here are a few... please add on!

    "Madlenka's Dog" by Peter Sis

"The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats

"Busy Day, Busy People" by Tibor Gergely

    "Rush Hour" by Christine Loomis

"Urban Babies Wear Black" by Michelle Sinclair Colman and Nathalie Dion

I live in London - if you're ever headed here, pick up 'Katie in London', which is a lovely book about the city. We also have all the Madeline books as we travel to Paris often.

My favourite would be Kay Thompson's Eloise books. From Amazon: "I am Eloise/I am six." So begins the well-loved story of Eloise, the garrulous little girl who lives at New York's Plaza Hotel. Eyebrow raised defiantly, arm propped on one jutting hip, Eloise is a study in self-confidence. Eloise's personal mandate is "Getting bored is not allowed," so she fills her days to the brim with wild adventures and self-imposed responsibilities. An average Eloise afternoon includes braiding her pet turtle's ears, ordering "one roast-beef bone, one raisin and seven spoons" from room service, and devising innovative methods of torture for her guardians. I always see neighbor-hood specific books around Brooklyn: Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems, I Live in Brooklyn by Mari Takabayashi.

Not entirely about living in a city but a great tool for talking about 9/11 with littler ones...

One of my fave kids' books is Ira Sleeps Over, about a sleepover in a big city (NY I presume).

And from my neck of the woods:

Good Night, San Francisco (Good Night World Series)

This is San Francisco (also a series)

    Maybelle the Cable Car

The Cable Car and the Dragon by Herb Caen

Eve Bunting's books often deal with urban themes (like homelessness in Fly Away Home)
