How do people manage to scrape up enough money to pay for preschool? I just got a shock earlier this month when I received a bill to hold a space for my son for NEXT FALL! I knew I'd have this expense but I thought maybe I'd have until at least the spring to pay for it...

Will the school let you pay in increments? The ones we've applied to allow you to do so .... Perhaps worth asking if they'd allow that ..

well, living in Omaha, I am sure things are much cheaper than in NY but I know, costs are terrible.  For daycare for my baby and preschool for our daughter, we pay $1500/month which is more than our house payment.  It is so oppresive.  I feel like we can never get ahead.  I can't wait for kindergarden.  Even a private elementary school here is cheaper than what I am paying now!!!

I would call it that as well...only we don't even have a first mortgage! I'm afraid paying for preschool just may make owning a home a pipe dream! Who knew?

i'm sure its too late for this fall but you could also look into some of the public preschools programs- if your child is over 2 usually- some of the empowerment schools in nyc have AMAZING programs that wont make you hate the board of ed... in brooklyn check out the Brooklyn New School

I guess I am lucky... I live in Charlotte, NC and I only pay $480 a month (actually $120 a week, so $600 some months) for my baby boy. It will go down as he gets older too. I will admit that I can't wait until he is a bit older... as one person previously posted... even private school is less expensive! His currently daycare is at a private school that I plan on having him attend when he is older and I've compared the tuition and it is hysterical. Well it is hysterical if you have a dark sense of humor... lol...

I feel your pain.  The school fees hit the hardest, because they come only three times a year so you're lulled into a false sense of financial security on the off months.  Then, bam - they arrive in the mail.  Ouch.
