I always swore I would not be the person who has a baby and then never gets a babysitter.

But lo and behold -- I am that person.  My cheapness combines with my guilt that I already leave him in other people's care for too many hours a day   And I'm one of those moms who has a perfectly happy child but I find it hard to chill out enough to trust my most precious snot-nosed diapered devil to just any one.

All that plus I'm just too exhausted at the end of the day these days to consider having fun anything but more work.    And Hugo is starting to have separation issues, and mommy or daddy leaving the room can sometimes get him weepy.

That said, in the past 17 months we've hired a babysitter a total of three times. And she is just delightful.  She's a stylishly hot church-going 18-year-old from a large family who attracts babies like a magnet.  She is a teacher at Hugo's school and the babies seem to flock to her in a trance, much the same way fish hone in on Aquaman.

Heres a short vid of Hugo with his babysitter.  When she comes to the house his mouth drops open -- as if I've gotten him Elvis, Kelly Clarkson and the Wiggles in one -- and he can not stop smiling.  This video was taken after about 10 minutes of Hugo's intense screaming and laughing with joy.   When I left the house there was no separation anxiety.  In fact, he actually helped close the door as soon as I stepped out.  "Sayonara mama, don't rush home!" This is why this woman is worth her weight in gold and more.

To those of you who don't get out much, what are your reasons? Or are there those of you who ring for a babysitter every evening? How's that working for ya?  I'm interested. Do tell.

  • I'll Fly Away

I'm trying to figure out when to go to LA this year.  As I've a brand new nephew there and many great friends, I may not wanna live there -- ask me about getting carjacked at gunpoint by UCLA! - but it is, at least now, a great place to visit.

Problem is: I've only two weeks of vacation a year.  Yes, I actually have less vacation now than when I started at my company four years ago, oweing to our being bought by a new company.  I'm not dissing them -- do you hear me world!  Not dissing!  I really dig what I do, and say that v. often -- but on the vacation front, it's just the truth and the truth can set you free and all that.

So with the LA trip and the other side of the family spread across the  UK, I can't really imagine when I might have time to see the world or maybe just get a haircut.  My last haircut? March 2007.  Last vacation that was staying somewhere other than with family?  March 2007.  I went skiing in a frozen tundra and was served a raw chicken sandwich that became famous along the way. Yes, staying with family much better.  See above pic of a thrilled Hugo on his way to England last summer.  FYI British Airways, after they un-messed up our reservation, was simply awesome for flying with baby, especially after the free upgrade.

Oh and I am going to go see a friend or two in Florida for a long weekend.  Been trying to get there for good reason since December.  More on that good reason soon.  I may even go without Hugo.  It would be my first time away from him for 24 hours -- ever.  I'm sure some mom who travels for business wants to slap me for being so weak.  And I say I probably need it.

My husband works for a British company. He gets 6 weeks of vacation a year. Plus, every few years he gets a few weeks of paid sabbatical to work on a book or take up knitting or whatever.  So, everyday he gets to take that I don't (4+ weeks!) I'm really upset because I love him and we can't spend the time together.  But I'm also jealous as a green cow and seethe quietly in his general direction nonetheless.  Mature, I know!

Anyway LA in June?  July?  Waiting until the neph-Q can hold his head up sounds about right, right?

Enough from me.  Speaking of getting an itch to roam and explore new venues, here's Hugo and his wanderlust -- for my shoes.

    Ciao 4 now Internet sweets.

    xoxo,

    Susie
