You know the ones. Well-groomed. Peaceful. Soft-voiced and centered. My employer is notorious for encouraging us to be sure to "take time for ourselves" while piling more work on our desks. Balance talk puts the onus for the balancing on the person whose life is chaotic, which is why you want to throttle the cheery parents who say they do it. *They* -- those cheery "balanced" parents -- don't *do* anything. Something in their world gives them enough relief from parenting and enough relief from working to do both with a modicum of self-respect. Give me the Finnish family leave plan and I'll show you some balanced mamas and papas.

Uh, I'll gladly "surrender" as soon as I figure out how to pay the mortgage AND get my kids taken care of. Thanks for the tip!
