The JumpArounds: HSM for The Preschool Set

Who are The JumpArounds? You probably will know that all too well very soon.

The JumpArounds are a fictional band which Nickelodeon is basing a new summer series around. There’s Shout. Marina, Kiki, and Twist (Twist and Shout are males), who apparently go around uttering phrases like “hip hop and pop!” or “Cool beans!” when they are happy about something.

The press release from Nickelodeon calls it this: “…a new, original live-action comedy series that teaches preschoolers about music appreciation and how to express their feelings and emotions through movement, song and instrumental music. Set to original pop songs, the 20-episode half-hour series also introduces kids to the fundamentals of music such as melody, rhythm, tempo and performance styles.”

I call it grating. Watching the relentlessly upbeat, chipper videos, all I could think was “Seriously? They got rid of “Jack’s Big Music Show” for this?

But actually, I think it’s not aimed at all at the little kids who loved Jack’s. No, I think it’s directed right at the somewhat older kids whose parents let them watch “High School Musical” and whatever other similar stuff is getting churned out of the Disney factory.

Those movies are, really, way too old for the kindergarteners and even preschoolers who I know watch it, but the JumpArounds are the same boppy choreography and wholesome, insipid music as those franchises but aimed at the little-kid set.

It’s enough to make me turn to Yo Gabba Gabba, really. And Yo Gabba Gabba creeps me out.

Jack Black Drops In on Yo Gabba Gabba

You either love Yo Gabba Gabba or you detest the H&R Puff N Stuff out of it.

Kind of like Jack Black, the over the top, goofball star of . . . pretty much EVERYTHING these days.

When we at Babble heard the two were coming together, we just had to have a look. Want to know what happens when Jack Black runs out of gas and lands in Gabbaland?

First, if you're a Jack Black fan, you're going to love the show on April 3. And if you're not, you might still love it. A surprisingly subdued Jack - with some equally surprising blonde highlights (what's that all about Jack?) limps his unleaded motorbike into Gabbaland to find the inner workings of DJ Lance Rock's boombox deserted.

Creeped out, Jack hops around like only a chunky guy with total and complete self esteem (and I mean that in the very nicest of ways - I dig his confidence) can, singing about the possible dangers lurking. Basically, kids, he lets you know it's OK to be scared, but Toodee, Plex, Foofa and the whole gang don't let scared last for long. They're inviting Jack to parties (outside of the tummy) and exchanging dance moves (think Travolta and do the disco roll).

This one should shut down the doubting Thomases who think the show tries too hard to play funky and misses the kid friendly mark. You can't go wrong with singing, dancing and solving real kid problems. Throw in the guy who voiced Kung Fu Panda, and you've got them hooked. Since we all know YGG plays it to the adults too, here's a few things to watch out for - 30 Rock's Jack McBrayer and Human Giant's Paul Scheer tell the knock knock joke of the day (which I refuse to spoil for you).

Oh, and Jack Black in DJ Lance's orange jumpsuit? PRICELESS.

Daddy Club Rule: Don't Argue Kids Shows

I wonder if the puppy blogs miss me. Because I've been getting my much-needed (in this economy, anyway) fix of "yes, things are right in this world," from Kids Say the Cutest Things here on Babble of late.

Who doesn't want to share their kidlet's latest cutie pie saying with people who actually CARE to hear it? As in someone other than the guy at the coffee pot at work whose eyes start to glaze over just around the words "and yesterday, she said . . . "

But as we've got KSCT already taking care of the kid quotes, I'll spare you mine (or at least let you make your own guesses as to which on there might have been inspired by the three-year-old in the Sager household). As for the adult conversations - I'm sorry, you're in the same boat as the coffee guy.

Because if there's one thing my husband is slowly starting to learn, it's DON'T argue with the kid over kid stuff. We'll call it Daddy Club Rule number one. You might be in decade three of life on this planet, but let's face it - you're clueless.

Case in point - the argument last week over the dancing robot on Noggin. "It's Brobee," my husband said. "Noooo, Daddy, it's Plex," (said with appropriately exaggerated eye roll).

"Brobee."

"Plex."

You get the idea. I sat through this, and because no one likes to hear "I told you so," I stayed silent. Until the next episode of Yo Gabba Gabba came on anyway. The "magic robot?" Yeah, her name is Plex. Brobee is "the little green one."

It's not that my husband is always wrong. It's that he bothers to belabor the point with a three-year-old . . . about a TV show character. If we were fighting about the name of the president (Dick Cheney, duh), I've told him, he should go full bore. But it's a dancing fluff ball. On TV.

So Dads, this is from my husband to all of you - the first rule of Daddy Club, don't talk about kid shows.

Everybody has played the Desert Island Disks Game: if you were stranded on deserted island for the rest of your life, what 5 compact disks would you bring? That’s right; I said compact disks, no IPods. I know my list would at least have OK Computer and Weezer’s Blue Album on there somewhere. But I just concocted a variation on the game: what if the 5 disks you chose had to be kids’ music? Don’t claw you’re face off just yet; there’s some pretty decent kids music out there. I think I’d have to take some Backyardigans and that new Yo Gabba Gabba CD that came out.

What about you? What would you take if it could only be kids’ music? Let’s get a big, fat list going.

Are these toys sold out?

According to Gareb Shamus of Toy Wishes Magazine, these toys are what all the kids want. But, says Shamus, you can't get them, because they're sold out. I'm not sure that he's correct about that. We checked on seven toys here, now let's try eight more.

8. Clone Wars Voice Changing Helmet: Again, Amazon's got it, not even from a third-party shipper. But it's not Darth Vader. So what's the point? According to the product description, "Kids want to be clone troopers." (That's actually listed as a product feature. Odd.) I hope that this statement is not true. If it is, that is sad. Wanting to be Han Solo, I get. Wanting to be a Clone Trooper? Say it ain't so, Bo(ba).

9. Wall-E - U-Command, i-Dance and Transforming: i-Dance they have. Same with U-Command. (Couldn't find Transforming for some reason.) However, both are from third-party folks, and U-Command is over $150.00. That seems like a bad idea unless one of the commands is "rob a bank."

10. Club Penguin Plush and trading cards: Bingo! Club Penguin Plush, not in stock as of this writing. Available from a random person. Looks kind of ugly to me but what do I know. Trading cards they have from third party folks.

11. Webkinz – Plush: It might be tough to find the specific one your kid wants (Webkinz Platypus, anyone? I just made that up) but these are out there.

12. Imaginext – Superfriends: Amazon has it! At least, they have some of them, like this Batmobile. If these are from the same series of toys that my younger son has, I highly recommend them. It's like Batman-lite – more BatMite than Dark Knight. (If you get that reference, you earn points towards your Geek Gold Card.) Fun for kids and also dads. At least this dad.

13. Nerf - all the Nerf Blasters: Well, not ALL, since Amazon has this ominously named Nerf N-Strike Recon CS-6 Dart Blaster. Weapon of kiddie mass destruction, anyone? Also not for the under 3 set.

14. Eyeclops night vision goggles: These look kinda cool, and are in stock. My problem with toys like these is that in my experience kids get bored with them pretty quickly. But perhaps your children are different.

15. Girl Gourmet cupcake maker: I'm not a fan of children making "real" food with dopey fake playsets like these. Why is that? Because I can't imagine that the ingredients of the "special cupcake mixes" are substances that occur in nature. This comment from Amazon, titled "What's that smell??" is telling and quite helpful: "At the end of the day, it was fun for them, stinky for all of us and too darn messy. You are better off with supervised baking then this junky mix." The commenter goes on to say that the product is a good idea but the "flavoring needs tweaking." I beg to differ, but hey, to each his or her own. I'm not against my children eating crap, but they should eat good old American pre-packaged crap that doesn't require further preparation.

So no offense to Mr. Shamus, but this stuff doesn't appear to be as sold out as he said. I'm thinking bad economy = easier to find popular toys. To be fair, many of the items were unavailable except through third-party sellers. But it seems like, with a little digging, you can get most of what your kids want. Not that the holidays are all about toys. But sometimes they are.

They Say – Lots of Toys Are Sold Out – Or Are They?

According to Gareb Shamus of Toy Wishes Magazine, these toys are what all the kids want. But, says Shamus, you can't get them, because they're sold out. I'm not sure that he's correct about that. Let's see what we can find in stock.

1.      Bakugan: My son actually got this as an early Chanukah present. Not bad but a little over-rated in my opinion. Basically you throw little balls into a plastic arena, and if the balls hit a particular magnetic card, they pop open. It's neat but only for the first hundred times. There are also rules that seem too complex for my taste, but I’m old and sometimes these games confuse me. Available at Amazon.
2.      Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman: Lego Star Wars is great. Lego Batman, feh. Don't bother. I'm talking about the video games, though, not the Legos themselves. In general I believe that any Legos are good Legos, so if you can't find Star Wars or Batman versions, just go with regular ones. If the kids complain, tell them they should be glad they're getting any presents at all in this economy. (OK, telling them that would be mean. But it's fun to think about, right?) Lots of options at Amazon, but it does appear that most are sold out.
3.      Star Wars Action Figures - All, particularly Clone Commander Cody and Ahsoka Tano: This reveals me to be a tremendous nerd, but I think I've outed myself as Dorky Dad a long time ago. Commander Cody action figures are sold out??? That just doesn't seem right. I mean, I remember when Boba Fett was hard to find. That I can understand. But Commander Cody? C'mon. Available at Amazon for a whopping $44.99. Crazy.
4.      Dora Magical Figures: I found these on Craig's List, although they're probably gone by now. (Note: I am not suggesting you buy something from Craig's List. Also not suggesting that you DON'T buy from Craig's List. That is what is known as a "covering my butt disclaimer". That's a legal term.)
5.      Ben 10 Alien Creation Chamber: Amazon has it from a third-party retailer. Sadly, it does not appear to create life-size "Island of Doctor Moreau" creatures.
6.      Hasbro - Marvel Transformers: I was unaware of the existence of these action figures, but now that I am, I must have them. I mean, my son must have them. Iron Man meets Transformers? Are you kidding me??? Amazon seems to have them in stock from third-party retailers. I… I mean, my SON, really wants these. All of them.
7.      Yo Gabba Gabba Dance Mat: Amazon's got it. It looks fun, but noisy. Also: "CHOKING HAZARD -- Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs." Which seems odd because that's an age I would think this product appeals to. But I guess not.

Yo Gabba Gabba! DVD & Giveaway

Kitchenista: Cupcake Update

I'm still not sure if this would be a Crafty or a Kitchenista. Ah, the quandaries of the Strollerderby blogger.

Prompted by the recent announcement of that my favorite cupcake blogger is calling it quits (but is still leaving her recipes up, thankfully), I've been on a quest to fill the cupcake-sized hole in my heart. So far, I've not had much luck.

In my quest to find a cupcake pornographer I love as much as the one above. I've stumbled over a few ideas that would be perfect for a kid's party. Like the ones pictures at right. You have to admit that these Yo Gabba Gabba treats are either horrifying or the cutest things ever. And at my next birthday party, I want a frosting shot.

Above all else, remember that cupcakes can kill, according to The Daily Show's Dr. Rob Riggle, who I'd also like covered in frosting at my next birthday party.

Review: The Shins on Yo Gabba Gabba!

I've mentioned the Nick Jr. show Yo Gabba Gabba! before, and I must admit that I didn't fully get the show at first. But after checking out an episode from the new season featuring indie-rock stalwarts The Shins (premiering today on Nick Jr.), I think I understand why it's so popular.

This is clearly a program meant for Nick Jr.'s target age group of 2-5 year-olds. If DJ Lance Rock's hat doesn't grab the little ones attention, the brightly colored (and Daytime Emmy Award-nominated) design scheme definitely will. I watched this episode with Thing 2, and he was completely mesmerized throughout.

But while the show definitely targets younger kids, there is definitely stuff in there for us old folks. 1980's and 90's hip-hop star Biz Markie has a regular segment where he beatboxes; having The Biz on to make the music with his mouth is something that brings back fond musical memories for folks of a certain age (such as, you know, me.) The whole idea of a DJ with a giant boom box – kids, that's what the guy in the funny hat is carrying on his shoulder when he enters – is totally retro, especially in this age of iPods and MP3s. Even the basic concept of DJ Lance interacting with characters who are toys that seem to come to life is reminiscent of Mr. Rogers' Land of Make Believe.

The episode premiering today features The Shins, a popular indie-rock band that broke through to a wider audience after having their music included in the film "Garden State." Their 2007 album "Wincing the Night Away" sold more than 100,000 copies in its first week and was nominated for a Grammy. So while they ain't exactly Raffi, they fit in just fine, popping up to sing on YGG's "Super Music Friends Show" segment. The announcer says, "Here they are to remind us, it's OK, try again – The Shins!" And there they are indeed, in full flannel-shirt and horn-rimmed glasses glory. The song delivers a simple message – "sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but it's OK, to try again" – and features The Shins pleasant pop style.

Yo Gabba Gabba! is simple enough for a very young child to grasp, and there are enough retro-fun touches so that adults won't feel their brains crawling out of their ears. (Hideous Purple Dinosaur, I'm looking in your direction.) Besides, as DJ Lance says, "Listening and dancing to music is… AWESOME!" How are you going to argue with that?

Nick Jr. show makes the childless want to conceive

Jezebel has a video clip from Nick Jr.'s Yo Gabba Gabba. In it, the not-terribly-bright host of a dance party is upset because no one is dancing. Super Robot Martian Girl shows up and tells the dimwit that no one is dancing because...there is no music. (Really.) So she saves the day at a dance party by beaming in a band, 'Josie and the Pussycats' style, who play a song called "Martian Girl," which is apparently a cover version of "Nice & Wild's freestyle classic Diamond Girl." (I admit publicly that I have never heard the original song, and I also admit that I am not embarrassed to admit this.)

As with so many blog entries, the best stuff is in the comments:

I may be a frigid childfree dyke, but this show makes me want to have babies STAT!

Every time I see a Yo Gabba Gabba clip somewhere on the internet I think to myself "must remember to watch this when high" and "must remember to watch this when have kids". The former will likely come up a few hundred times before the latter is an issue, but still...

So if we see another baby boom, especially among the stoner population, we have DJ Lance and crew to thank. Enjoy

I've never seen Yo Gabba Gabba, but apparently it teaches kids about comic books and features musical interludes by Biz Markie. So I may have to give it a try, with or without the kids.

The 20 Best Kids Movies

So what are the best kids movies of all time? You can find them neatly compiled here at Entertainment Weekly. Agree? Disagree? What do you think should have made the list and what should be torn from the list immediately? Here’s my question: do adults have any business deciding what makes a great kids movie? If there is anything I have learned from my 4-year-old it is she and I have a difference in opinion when it comes to children’s entertainment. I am always trying to direct her toward shows like The Backyardigans and Yo Gabba Gabba because I think they are actually pretty jazzy, clever, and in the case of Yo Gabba Gabba delightfully absurd (read: bizarre). However, Jillian turns her nose up at these suggestions in deference for Dora and Diego. Nothing against Dora, but compared to The Backyardigans she can’t carry a tune. So, do the pop culture hipsters at Entertainment Weekly have it right? Would your six-year-old sit through to Kill A Mockingbird?

No Gabba Gabba!

Few kids' TV shows creep me out as much as Yo Gabba Gabba does. Give me the penile Boobahs or the Teletubbies' sun baby any day -- both are less disturbing than DJ Lance and his freaky little toys. Heck, I'd even spend 15 minutes alone with a clown before I'd subject myself to Yo Gabba Gabba.

Which seems to put me in the minority in Strollerderbyland. It also strips me of any shreds of hipster cred I might have had. I'm OK with this. Anything that puts me in the camp that Neal Pollack isn't in is a good thing.

The New York Times' Rob Walker took on the YGG phenomenon in his Consumed column in the Sunday magazine. Walker's piece is sharply written, as usual. I thought it might help me put my finger on exactly what it is about the show that trips my cognitive dissonance into puree mode. I know it has something to do with the idea of "cross-platform marketing," "high-end toys" and "equal parts Jimmie Walker and Bootsy Collins."

I can't seem to get the argument pinned down, however. When I start to come up with a thesis for why this show is just so flippin' wrong, the images of Elijah Wood doing the "Puppet Master" dance chase any coherent thoughts plumb out of my head.

Which it just did again. I need to go sit in the corner and shudder for the rest of the morning.

Then Things Got Weird

A good friend of mine is married to a guy from Sweden. After a few rounds of aquavit, we got to talking about TV shows we watched as kids. Sid and Marty Krofft came up, of course, as did Alphabet Soup and Romper Room. Then Ola, the Swede, mentioned something about a show with a big pancake.

"A big pancake?" one of us asked, assuming that something had gotten lost in translation.

"Yes," Ola said, "a big pancake. It would come alive and become a magical world with creatures that crawled around on it. There was also a sick little boy whose blanket was the pancake. And a magician."

Which just goes to show you. TV for kids is always trippier than adults can imagine. As evidence, I merely point to Yo Gabba, Gabba, Boobah and all of these shows that the Times (U.K.) rounded up from around the world.

Mo' Gabba Gabba

Not that you need any more reason to watch Nick Jr.'s "Yo Gabba Gabba!," the live-action, breakbeat disco freakout winning the hearts and booties of kids and parents everywhere, but it will be premiering four new episodes the week of Monday, November 26. The new shows will feature Laila Ali (aka the Champ's daughter), country group Sugarland, reggae crooner Sean Kingston, and Japanese indie-rocker Cornelius. If that's not sufficiently all over the map for your musical tastes, Biz Markie will return to teach beatboxing in his "Beat of the Day" segments.

It does my heart good to see this show doing so well. It makes me think of something the Beastie Boys could have done if they were on the Sesame Street production team during the Paul's Boutique era. My only hang with the show is that I fear I may be more into it than my son:

"Look Boy, it's Biz Markie! C'mon, beatbox with me!"

"I want to see the robot again, Daddy."

Maybe I need to download one of the show's iron-on transfers and make him a Plex T-shirt to win him over. But I will say this and stand by it: there can never be too much Biz Markie on TV.

Yo Gabba Gabba: Can a Kid's Show Be Good?

It's coming... The premiere of Yo Gabba Gabba is just around the corner. That's the new kids show that hopes to dispense with annoying characters and insipid songs by featuring some folks with talent (no offense to Steve from Blue's Clues, who I will love eternally.) The line-up is impressive, to say the least: the August 20 - August 30 premiere week stars include Elijah Wood, Mya, Biz Markie, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Hector Jimenez (Nacho Libre) and The Aquabats. Later episodes will have appearances by Laila Ali, Tony Hawk, The Shins, Sean Kingston, Sugarland, Rahzel and Nikki Flores. In other words, "Dang, that sounds good."

The program will introduce kids to a range of musical genres, from electronic to British Invasion to hip hop. Elijah Wood teaches the "Puppet Master" dance in the premiere episode on Nick Jr. and NOGGIN on Monday, August 20 at 10:30 a.m. (ET/PT). Here's a clip of the Shins, and I adore them, so I'm happy. But you know what gets me giddy? Mark Mothersbaugh. And he's a recurring character. Ah, Devo...

Yo Gabba Gabba! Finds a Home, er, "Crib" on Nick Jr.

Nick Jr. has announced it has picked up a new original half-hour preschool series, Yo Gabba Gabba! The 20-episode live-action magazine-style series will use music and song to highlight simple life lessons and universal experiences in the lives of preschoolers. The series (which already has a cult following) is scheduled to premiere on Nick Jr. in Fall 2007.

Yo Gabba Gabba! "puts the funk in preschool" and stars Host DJ Lance Rock who brings to life five friendly toy characters in a colorful land full of song and dance. The magazine-style format of the series is infused with a retro style and beat driven music. Yo Gabba Gabba! will feature animated segments, real kids and special guests, in addition to a vibrant world of puppet characters who are all ready to sing, play, and dance along with your little hip-hoppers – as soon as they hear the magic words, "Yo Gabba Gabba!"
