I didn't have to figure out how to get those things to grow!

The top two things holding most parents back from growing their own food? Space and fear . . . fear that they don't have the money, the time, or the know-how.

Turns out you don't need much of any of the above.

A Georgia family made this video for Earth Day, but it's appropriate for all spring long - and for every family. Living in a city area, BreeAnne and Courtney (owners of one of my favorite clothing stores) show you don't need much land or much money to grow a few things. And their daughter has more fun than you can shake a worm at (no, really, watch!).

They're not growing much, but even just some tomatoes and peppers have the makings of some yummy tomato sauce (and if you've ever eaten a fresh-out-of-the-garden tomato, you have now lived long enough to die and go to some food heaven somewhere . . . seriously).

Inspired? Sure, she does all the right things, like recycling. But at the same time, part of her yearns to rebel and do something totally anti-establishment, like maybe use a styrofoam cup or throw something plastic into a regular trash can.

Bazelon's essay makes me wonder whether other children feel the same way. Is it possible we are raising a generation of individuals who -- after hearing everyone from their parents to their teachers to the hosts of their favorite TV shows constantly spouting inconvenient truths -- wishes they could be anti-environmentalists? Or, to put it more bluntly, have we Al Gore-d our kids to death?

Personally, I don't see our children doing a 180 and starting to send us back as far as environmental consciousness is concerned. Too many green practices have already become such a part of their daily lives and attitudes that it would be impossible to make them stop using recycling bins or trying to conserve water when they brush their teeth. And that's a good thing. But when any young person starts to drown in a barrage of messages on the same subject -- no matter what it is -- there is a tendency to either tune out or get fed up.

Bazelon suggests that one way to overcome this is to make sure the environmental lessons we teach our kids are age-appropriate and administered in reasonable doses. She also thinks that the best way to start encouraging kids to love the Earth is by simply letting them breathe it in. Take them to a park, but don't talk to them about the litter you spot on the ground. Watch a documentary about animals without preaching about how global warming could be threatening said creatures' extinction. Enjoy a sunny day without thinking about anything but the beauty of all that warmth and light.

Do that, she suggests, and when it's time for the Earth-Day-style lessons, maybe they'll mean a lot more. I think she's absolutely right.

Save the Planet, Save Money On Organic Food

In keeping with Earth Day, Consumer Reports (via the Consumerist) has some suggestions of how to save money on organic foods. One ideas is to prioritize your purchases: concentrate on foods that when conventionally grown have the most pesticides, like apples, peaches, strawberries and the like.

Another is to try the store brands. I swear by this –I couldn’t afford to eat anything organic were ti not for Trader Joe’s (also, almost one of their foods have high frustose corn syrup in them) and the private label organics from the two local supermarkets I prefer. Consumer Reports also suggests Costco’s Kirkland Signature organics brand. I agree – however, dealing with the massive warehouse club packaging can be a problem if you have a smaller family or a smaller house.

My personal Costco tip is to shop with a friend and split things. For example, they sell three-pound containers of organic spring mix for something like $5, less than half of what we’d spend for conventionally grown at the local fruit market. But that’s a lot less of a bargain if half of it ends up going bad before you can eat it. My solution is to give half to my mom, who loooovvves her some spring mix, whenever we buy it.

Also, look at some of the big organic brand’s websites for coupons, join a food co-op of there is one nearby, and shop in season. Some of the commenters also suggest buying a community-supported agriculture share or buying “pre-organic” from a farmer’s market. Many farmers are looking to switch to organic but have not been following those practices long enough to be certified as organic farms, so buying pre-organic can both save you money and help the farmer along in that process. Farmer’s markets, whether you’re buying conventional or organic, help the environment by reducing the carbon footprint of your food. And? They’re just plain fun for kids.

What They're Babbling About: Bring It On Home

Want another helping of our trip around the 'net? Cute, loveable and very red Elmo was going to lose his red fur.

Who knew it would come at the hands of equally cute and kind of ditzy fairy Abby Cadabby? Elmo's gone green - literally - in his new DVD, and Babble got a sneak-peek at the all new Elmo and how to throw together a tele-thon Sesame Street style.

Just in time for Earth Day, Paul Rudd (they're continuing the cute theme) suits up in a giant globe costume to host the Sesame Street Earth-a-thon.With Rosita, Telly and Cookie Monster manning the phones, pledges from kids to help the earth start rolling in (and pleas for cookies start rolling out).

In true Sesame Street style, the pledges shoot the show out to spots around the globe where kids are going green in their own way, from kids who watch their glass bottles be melted down and reformed into glass knick-knacks in South Africa to Turkish tots who have an eye for reusing plastic bags.

Bringing it back to Sesame Street, Elmo and Abby make the rounds of the recycling bins and the furry red monster makes a promise to Rudd, aka. Mr. Earth to go green. Which is all fine and dandy until Abby lends her wand to the cause, leaving Elmo looking like he's switched suits with a fellow muppet with a fondness for Miss Piggy. It may not be easy being green, but Elmo fans know he'd never let a little mixed up magic get in the way.

The Sesame Street character love aside, Being Green is a movie that helps break down the big green questions for little green minds. We talk a lot about helping the Earth, but what IS it? Not a guy in a globe suit, but Rudd shows his inner goofball (can you tell this guy's a dad?) walking the muppets on a tour around himself. Songs about saving water when they brush their teeth and saving energy when they shut off the lights send home messages that little kids can make a big difference.

Out on DVD on April 7, you can put in your pre-orders now on Amazon, but if you click on the picture below, your kids have a coloring sheet to get them ready. Well, not from TV but all games and gadgets. Why would they do such a thing? They’re asking for kids to unplug for Earth Day to “symbolize a commitment to helping the environment.” But they’re not requesting that kids detox from media all day, heavens no. They’re asking for one minute, and that minute doesn’t include TV. And that minute is conveniently scheduled for 9pm on April 22, when most of their demographic will be fast asleep.

Really? One minute? Can’t our kids handle and hour, a day, or even a week?

But beyond the unplugged minute, they may also be urging viewers, as they have in the past, to go our and play for “three hours one day each year.”

What do you think would be a good length of a media fast?

Source

Ready for Easter? Naturally Better books are as much an ode to Potter herself as they are the earth. A staunch environmentalist and conservationist, Beatrix Potter's love of the outdoors inspired her bunny books as well as her work with the National Trust in her native England during her life. She bred sheep and kept rabbits so child visitors would not be disappointed.

When Potter died, she left some four thousand acres and several fams to the Trust to keep the land pristine and undeveloped. To this day, the area remains one of the most rural in all of England.

Now her books are going to help her cause, along with new environmentally-friendly food, toiletries and toys. The licensor of theThe World of Beatrix Potter has drawn up a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility calling for all products to be made by suppliers who adhere to ethical working practices and who support healthy formulation of products. "Everyday food products will contain organic ingredients, be GM free,
and will contain no added salt or sugar. Toiletries are free from
harmful and unnecessary chemicals such as artificial musks, parabens
and phthalates, are not tested on animals and will be hypoallergenic."

Publishers of the twenty-three original Peter Rabbit books plus a few new titles (including the Peter Rabbit Peekaboo with interactive flaps) have earned certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, an international non-profit which focuses on the sustainability of forests. According to FSC, "products bearing the FSC logo, which guarantees that
the wood from a certified well-managed forest, are available
across the world from a variety of mills, manufacturers,
                        and distributors."

Want to turn your kids' Easter baskets green? Earth Day may come but once a year, but we have some books to keep your kids earth-aware 365/24/7. - April Peveteaux

And the Good Brown Earth by Kathy Henderson is a lovely agrarian tale about the cycle of life. What is especially touching is the relationship between Gram and her grandson as they dig, let the land lay fallow and ultimately plant and grow a bountiful harvest as "…the good brown earth got on with doing what the good brown earth does best." And the Good Brown Earth feels more 1970s than 21st Century, since the good old days of the family farm have been mostly replaced by corporate behemoths, but it is nice to get nostalgic. And it is a perfect tool to explain where that local/organic produce at the Greenmarket comes from.

It’s Earth Day! by Mercer Mayer follows Little Critter who, along with his class, is inspired by some film (I wonder which one?) that shows the plight of the polar bears. Little Critter shows kids exactly what to do in order to promote climate change: They plant trees, turn off the water while brushing teeth and switch off the lights. These simple steps can be easily understood by your own little critter on their mission to reduce, reuse, recycle.

My Bag and Me! by Karen Farmer gets practical about helping kids make a change. After you and your child have read about how carrying your own bag for shopping helps reduce waste and saves trees, the last page contains a slide out drawer with child-sized reusable (and recyclable!) bag made from Tyvek. Maybe now that your little ones are carrying, they can help you remember to bring the damn bags on your next shopping trip.

And The Good Brown Earth,(Candlewick, 2008) It's Earth Day! (HarperCollins, 2008) and My Bag and Me! (Penton Kids Press, 2008) are available on Amazon.

Book of the Week appears every other Friday. A small mustached creature named the Lorax politely and persistently tries to warn the forces of consumption and greed, personified by the Once-ler, against destroying the environment in the name of progress. I remember seeing the cartoon of this one. Things start off whimsically and Seussically enough, but it gets pretty serious in the end. The message behind The Lorax is probably the strongest Dr. Seuss put to paper.

Now The Lorax is back and there is a way you can help him save the environment…

Conservation International, Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House, Inc have teamed together for something called the Lorax Project, which includes a reissue of the classic book. The Lorax project seeks to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable activities. One thing you can do is buy a copy of the reissued The Lorax, a portion of the proceeds go toward Conversation International to help fight deforestation.

Have any specific memories of The Lorax? Earth Day has been around for decades; it's funny to think of how many went by with hardly anyone noticing. Now, however, Earth Day is a pretty big deal, if for no better reason than to teach your kids about good sustainable practices and the importance of the global climate. Let's face it, our generation is trying to do better, but we are not going to do a 180. We've had cars, lived in suburbs and enjoyed apples flown in from Paraguay during the dead of winter for too long to give it all up. Yes, you bring a reusable shopping bag to the grocery store, good for you. Our kids are going to have to make far greater sacrifices, especially if the way we treat the earth now doesn't change.

The only way this earth will be saved from ruin is if future generations are ingrained with a respectful attitude and good habits toward the environment from the get go. So with that in mind, here are seven simple, fun and eco-smart activities you and your kid can do this earth day…

Here’s a couple to get you started: planting a tree with your child, making a bird feeder and creating recycling bins. The full list is here.

Out of all the seven tips included in the list, the one I like best is leaving the car at home one day and walking your kid to school. If this is something you can feasibly do, imagine the talk you can have about respecting the environment while you pass through it. Hell, I wish I could walk to work everyday.

And expect many of those to be targeting your kids. After all, kids are often the leaders in their families when it comes to changing habits – many parents I know report that their kids, especially once they get to school age, are the ones enforcing recycling and nagging about turning off lights and so on.

But one entity I didn’t expect to be pushing the whole Earth Day thing was one that has a pretty major stake in getting kids to be indoors, with the TV and DVD player and satellite dish all at full roar. Namely, the Disney Channel or more specifically Playhouse Disney, their morning block dedicated to young children.

I ran across an ad for this the other day when my daughter was getting her "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" fix (I am hanging my head in shame as I write this), and was curious as to what the pimped "Earth Day" section on their website might have to offer.

And it's so little as to be laughable: a game, two printable coloring pages and two other pages of tips for what families can do to celebrate Earth Day or be more environmentally conscious. Take nature walks, turn off the water when you're washing your hands, that kind of thing.

Not that I expected "An Inconvenient Truth" -- but are paper-wasting printables really the best incentive to be offering for Earth Day?

Book of the Week: Can You Guess the Twist Ending?

Let’s play a guessing game – I’m thinking of something that
is round like a ball. Your guess is “ball,” right? You’re totally wrong. Round Like a Ball is an expanded version
of this game, with each family member making a guess in response to clues,
until the round object is revealed to be (spoiler alert!) the Earth. Each of
the thickly painted illustrations has a hole in it, which gets progressively
larger as the game goes on, revealing more and more of the mystery object. The
hole becomes a matzoh ball (Grandma’s guess), a fishbowl (the cat’s guess), a
stone (the crunchy hippie aunt’s guess), and so forth. Finally there’s an oversized
fold-out page with a satisfying painting of the Earth. And then the last page
has conservation tips. But really, you can skip the straightforward Al Gore
stuff and enjoy the actual story, which give kids an entrée into thinking
big-picture thoughts about their planet. – Gwynne Watkins

Round Like a Ball (Blue Apple Books, March 28th) by Lisa Campbell Ernst is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Book of the Week appears every other Friday. The program is designed by Organic Valley, a farmers' collective, as a way of incorporating a meal tradition into Earth Day in the manner of other established celebrations.

It's kind of cool, actually. You can purchase a set of cards (profits go to the Organic Farm Friends Foundation) and use them as talking points to lead dinner conversation toward mindful eating, positive discussion about food and the earth, and personal memories. There are sample cards available for download, as well as recipe ideas to help plan a healthy organic dinner and a list of participatory restaurants for those who'd rather not cook. And specifically for kids, some fun links including Organic Valley's own kids' activity page.

I'm not really much for theme dinners that don't involve tons of garlic, tomatoes, and the Godfather saga, but I think I can get behind an organic lowcountry pilau with ham and bacon and going around the table to see who can name the most songs that reference food or eating, or hearing everyone's favorite food memory. It certainly beats our standard dinner conversation of poop, princesses, and politics.

Earth Day: 50 Tips For You And Your Family

Becoming a parent has turned me from a lip-service-paying dilettante into an actual tree-hugging freak, my heavy disposable razor blade habit notwithstanding. I used to care about the planet, now I actually try to find ways to show that I do. Things like DivineCaroline's list of 50 Green Tips are useful, because no matter how many things on the list that you're already doing, there are bound to be a few that you're not, but could be. Like, I might be the last eco-mama to get on board with Tip 7, Buy compact fluorescent light bulbs, which is criminal given that I live within walking distance from an Ikea.

Several of the things on the list actually make a parents' life easier: cutting back on junk mail (Tip 16) and getting bills sent and paid electronically (Tip 26) not only saves trees, but it eliminated one of the major sources of clutter in our house, leaving more clear spaces for Polly Pocket shoes to collect. Using eco-friendly cleaning products (Tip 42) or better yet, making your own from vinegar and other household staples (Tip 21) both saves money and relieves the fear of having your child take a swig of Scrubbing Bubbles. Tip 22 might be controversial though: if you have a baby, consider using cloth diapers. There's a school of thought that the chemicals, power, and water necessary to sanitize cloth diapers brings its own set of problems, and I have a feeling that this is ultimately something for which you'll have to follow your gut (too bad that diaper recycling thing seems like such a bust).

Tip 27 is Teach kids about the environment, but so many of the tips are fantastic ways to teach by doing. My four-year-old is on Reusable Grocery Bag patrol, charged with helping remind me to bring them into the store from the trunk and with helping me remember to return them to the trunk when we get home. She takes this job seriously to the extent that one day she had a complete meltdown when she realized we'd forgotten the bags at home. And my three-year-old is already a champion sorter of paper, plastic and bottles. Both kids are itching to move to a neighborhood where we can safely bike to more places. We talk in age-appropriate ways about not wasting resources and about reusing what we can, and we'll keep building on that as our family gets older.

What environmentalists practices has your family adopted? Anything on the list sound like something worth picking up?

'Green' Parenting Goes Mainstream

From cloth diapers to preservative free toys to organic cotton onesies to natural soaps, modern mamas are flexing their purchasing power more than ever, and 56% of us are doing our best to go green (or at least, greener). According to a poll taken by BabyCenter, women are living more eco-friendly lives to protect their children's health, and our planet, for the next generation.

So, how are we doing that? Little by little: we're buying more non-toxic cleaning products, recycling, eating organic food, using energy efficient appliances, and educating ourselves about the hazards of chemicals in our daily lives. Perhaps most importantly, though, we're teaching our kids to be smart about what they put on and in their bodies, and the importance of green living.

In recent years green living has become less of an urban/hippie trend, and more the societal norm, with the demand for eco-friendly products growing all the time. They used to be specialty products in specialty stores, but now eco-friendly products can be found in most mainstream superstores across the country.

Linda Murray, Editor-in-Chief of BabyCenter has a theory about how this shift came about: "Today's moms know small steps can add up and they want to do their part. It's a natural extension of the protective mothering instinct that kicks in the minute a woman learns she's pregnant. She becomes keenly aware of whether her food, activities, products, and environment are safe."

That pretty much sums up why I started eating organic, as well as buying chemical-free and non-toxic products whenever I can. Having kids is a pretty powerful catalyst for change - and having a strong collective voice is to speak out about the need for cleaner living for those kids is powerful as well.

Moms rule.

Earth Day: Fun Ways To Celebrate

Earth Day is this Sunday, and man, they really knew what they were doing in 1970 when they originally set the date for April 22. This is the time of year in most parts of the country where things have really turned to spring and people are finally able to get out and enjoy the outdoors. It's a perfect time to reintroduce your family to nature, whether that means outdoor activities like hiking or camping, learning to ride a two-wheeler, or getting your garden on.

Even if you're in one of the parts of the planet where spring hasn't quite settled in (Northeastern US, holla!), there are things you can do this weekend to observe Earth Day and get your kids thinking about their role in the ecosystem. Over at Kaboose, there are tons of crafts for kids of all ages, including awesome (and tasty) herb pots, a great "fossil" project using recycled coffee grounds, and some tasty recipes.

One Hour Craft also has a terrific gardening project for kids that doesn't require a yard or any outdoor space at all, really: starting seeds in tiny greenhouses made from plastic soda bottles. And if that's too crafty for you, head to Target--they've got tiny little terra-cotta pots with dirt pellets and seeds in the dollar bins right now.

Mrs. Imus Cancels Promo Tour Just In Time For Earth Day

Don Imus isn't just in trouble for making racist and misogynistic remarks. Now his (long-suffering? Can we assume that?) wife Deirdre has had to cancel the promotional tour for her new book, Green This! Volume 1: Greening Your Cleaning, a book that would probably have found its way into my family's home if not for the distasteful association with a man that I feel doesn't deserve any of my money, no matter how indirectly.

It's a shame that a woman who clearly cares quite a bit about children and the environment is forced by association to step away from an opportunity to take her show on the road and spread a pretty important message about how we can simplify and detoxify our lives. No meeting people at Borders, no "View," no "Martha." You know there's not going to be any Oprah possibilities.

Deirdre Imus's publisher, Simon and Schuster, states the following:

"Because of the pressure that the Imus family has been under, family is her first priority at this time."

Too bad her husband isn't so considerate. I hope she makes him sleep on the couch.
