And speaking of Halloween ... Oregon stay-at-home dad Thad Starr showed it's possible to do something productive during nap time, even if you wind up making out with produce.

The father of two won the world pumpkin series with a gourd that weighed in at 1,524 pounds -- or 300 more than the closest competitor.

His reaction?

"You'll see me kiss all my pumpkins," Starr said a few minutes later. "It kind of sounds corny, but you develop a bond with your pumpkins. ... They're almost your friends."

Congratulations, big guy. You're making fellow SAHDS proud -- and the wives of fellow SAHDS ask some serious, serious questions about daily time expenditures -- but still, I've got some advice for next year:

TiVo. It dulls the loneliness that makes pumpkin carving sound appealing.

Crafting a wand, as you can imagine, is not an easy task. It takes effort to get the magic just right. Lucky for you, the fine folks at Dad Can Do have you covered with detailed instructions on how to make your little Harry and Hermione the wands of their dreams. Older kids will be able to get right in there and help with this one, younger kids will pretty much be relegated to rolling the paper that forms the wand's base. But the finished product is pretty freaking magical.
