A researcher in Japan thinks he may have found a way to give women bigger boobs without invasive surgery or weight gain. They just have to download a very specifically engineered ringtone to their cellphones and let 20 to 40 calls per day work their magic.

What sort of sound could possibly perk up and pop out your sagging girls?

A baby's cry, naturally.

Hideto Tomabechi, researcher of artificial intelligence and the mind,wants to show that sounds affect more than just the mind -- they also affect our bodies. So he took a recording of a crying baby and stripped it down to its essential sounds. He hypothesizes (generalization alert!) that women will respond physiologically to the recorded sound of a crying baby in the same way they respond to the real sound. By responding so frequently, their breasts will grow.

Does he mean women all over Tokyo are going to be letting down every time the phone rings? Or do women respond in some way to babies' cries that I'm not aware of. I'm willing to concede that I (and my lactating boobs) respond physiologically to the sound of a crying baby ... NOW ... ever since having my first. But before ever having kids, I'm not entirely convinced I could even tell the difference between a crying baby and, say, an angry cat. Besides, if all it takes is a baby's cry, I should look like Pamela Anderson by now.

Of course, this Tomabechi guy is the same man authorities called on to deprogram the Aum Shinrikyo cult members (of sarin gas on the subway fame), and he's held up as some kind of mad genius. So maybe the nation's dissatisfied flat-chested should download the baby wails and answer the call to a more confident and happier you.

UPDATE:

"If my child's hungry, I'm going to feed it."

Genine Compton, the Dayton, OH mother who was charged with child endangerment for breastfeeding her child while she was driving. Oh, she was also on the phone, but that's been pushed to the side for now.

See, Compton's kid is breastfed at this exact time each morning. The police don't really care what the reason is, it's dangerous, and also illegal. First, there's that whole carseat thing, but also "the danger [of] an accident [and] possible deployment of the airbag," according to police. Compton says it's the same thing if she gets hit with an airbag. She also says she'll do it again if she feels the need to do so.

The potential penalty of 180 days in jail would put a pretty big damper on the baby's eating schedule, although I suppose Compton could pump and then pass her milk through the bars for someone else to give to her child. Still, one would think that simply not breastfeeding while driving from now on would be a simpler solution.

A woman in Ohio was driving while breastfeeding. Oh, and she was also talking on her cellphone.

To paraphrase my fellow Strollerderbian Jeanne Sager -- Now this is what I call multi-tasking.

I have a confession to make -- I've never breastfed, obviously, but I have given my infant son a bottle while talking on the phone. I wasn't driving, however. My way seems a little safer.

Driving While Breastfeeding would be DWB. I guess this could be DWBTC? Driving While Breastfeeding and Talking on a Cellphone?

The woman in question was allegedly caught in the act by a fellow motorist, who called the cops. The police then used the license plate number to track down the chatty momma. Her response? "39-year-old Genine Compton...told them she was breast-feeding and wouldn’t let her child go hungry."

Oh. OH. I see. Could you, perhaps, pull over to the side of the road? Just asking.

The charge is a misdemeanor, and the potential consequences are $1,800 fine and 180 days in jail. That seems like a lot of jail time for a misdemeanor, but what do I know.

Dayton police office Michael Burke pointed out that "the legal concern is that Compton had a child in her lap, not that she was breast-feeding in public." Well. Glad we cleared that up.

In this age of communication advancement, (cell phones, texting, twittering, IM, Facebook pokes, etc) it’s so easy for people to reach you; you almost wish it wasn’t so easy. But communication is important, like say, when your wife goes into labor. That’s something you want to know, so thank heavens you have this massive communications super structure to keep you in touch.

Of course that all falls apart if you leave your phone at home.

In Portland, Oregon, A woman in labor couldn't get in touch with her husband because he left his cell phone at home. Stuck in a desperate situation, the woman got innovative and sought to reach her husband by what would be in today’s technologically advanced environment, the equivalent of sending smoke signals: she called local radio station 97.1 Charlie FM.

She told morning hosts Dr. Doug and Skippy that her husband listens to the show every day and didn't know of any other way to reach him.

"I am in labor with our first baby, and my husband has left his cell phone at home. I have no way to get a hold of him other than you guys. He faithfully listens to you every single morning. So hopefully he is listening right now. Dan, you need to get to the hospital. We are having our baby," the woman said.

So perhaps our sophisticated communication system can sometimes fail, but on the plus side, people apparently still listen to the radio.

And for the record, Dr. Doug is not a real doctor.

From Leapfrog, maker of all things loud and useless, comes a new product you've really got to hope nobody sends your kid for her birthday -- the Baby BlackBerry. We all know that babies, toddlers and preschoolers are magnetically attracted to all their parents' electronic goodies (in our house, the iPhones are zealously guarded, lest the toddler make off with one and smear the screen with his grubby little hands), but is that any reason to buy them one of their own? Isn't this inviting an ever-faster indoctrination into the cult of consumerism, creating a new generation that will be even more disconnected from actual interaction that those preceding it?

Apparently the thing costs around $25, features simple games and a "pretend browser," along with a virtual pal named Scout, with whom preschoolers who can spell may exchange fake text messages. It's hard not to see this as a gateway drug to ever more expensive real phones and PDAs, a scary thought for those parents who had been hoping to wait till at least middle school before all that mess. As the parent of a toddler and a teenager, I will try not to scare you by telling you how many text messages the teen sends a month, but it's pretty impressive.

Leapfrog has made a mint selling things kids don't actually need, marketing to parents (and, I'm guessing, lots of grandparents) by appealing to their insecurity about being left behind in the great electronic revolution. I'm here to tell you that my toddler things the old calculator I gave him is a phone (or sometimes a "puter"), because it has keys and numbers, and he can carry it around and pretend to talk to Nana all he likes. Works for us!

I'm officially too old for this crap. This has nothing to do with birthdays, wrinkles or grey hairs. I've simply come to the conclusion that thirteen-year-olds having any kind of sex grosses me out.

Yes, that includes "tech sex." Excuse me for my Clintonian response here, but can I have a definition please?

A survey from the folks at Cosmogirl.com and The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy puts the number of teens sending racy text messages and shooting naked pics of themselves with their cell phone cameras at one in five. That's twenty percent of kids, although the number of girls is closer to twenty-two percent - not surprising there, guys talk a big game, but they're not as fond of sharing pictures of their johnson because of that little, er, fear of inadequacy.

Of course, we're still talking about teens and their johnsons . . . so, ewwww. I'm not a prude, but I'm not into kids - and the fact is, these pictures and texts aren't staying in kids' hands. The study showed the kids aren't just sending them to friends but fifteen percent have pushed a button and sent their private parts off to someone they know solely via the Web. In other words - into the hands of someone who could just as easily be a child predator as their new best friend.

I'm not a fan of taking kids off line - Myspace, Facebook and the like give them a real outlet for venting frustrations and reaching out of their own environment for like-minded individuals that can cut through the solitary life of a lonely teen. BUT, and this is a huge but here, naked pictures of a teenager can ruin lives down the road. I'm not talking getting kicked off the cheerleading squad; but imagine trying to run for president? Or walking into your boss' office when you're twenty-two, only to be handed a picture of yourself circa five years ago doing some very teenage versions of ultimate naughtiness?

Kids are just starting to get a handle on their body boundaries; and what they feel comfortable sharing. But where a teen girl flashing the football team used to be the stuff of urban high school legends, now a teen girl's accidental text about losing her virginity is the stuff blowing up the net.

I know parents today have valid reasons for getting their kids cell phones - even though none of us had them. Parents are more mobile today, and so are their kids. But at thirteen, a girl taking nude pictures of herself and sending them out to a boy . . . who is sending them out to the rest of the school . . . should be something avoidable. Maybe not giving our kids the best cell phone on the planet with all the gizmos - really, I think they might survive.

Cervical mucus tests skeev you out? Me too. Don't worry, BabyCenter has stepped in to take the eww out of baby-making with ovulation text alerts sent straight to your cell phone.

The Booty Caller will send three messages your way every month to let you know when it's time to get a little . . . and when it's not.

The service is free (your wireless company's standard texting fees still apply), sponsored by First Response (who, wouldn't you know, make ovulation and pregnancy tests). BabyCenter's building off survey estimates that 19.3 million moms text as it makes the bid for a few more of their mobile minutes.

As one of those one-and-done Moms, I've got to say I can see the booty caller becoming Dad's worst enemy. Sorry honey - checked with my phone, and I'm too fertile for words. On the other hand, they do say you can enter his cell phone number into the mix too - so at least he can be prepared to be jumped when he walks in the door.

At the very least, it's cheaper than calling the psychic hotline again to find out when you're finally going to get that second baby.

Another teacher, another sex scandal. Same unfortunate news, different day. But to make it interesting, Indiana gym teacher Brooke Biggs is accused of seducing a 16-year-old female student.

That I won't have to listen to some nasty radio DJ talking about the hot teacher and the lucky teenage boy is about the only silver lining to this story. Because I don't believe in the double standard for female teachers. Sorry, not even for a hot lesbian teacher.

That Brooke Biggs shares her name with a porn star doesn't make me laugh either (well, not much). The 27-year-old was in a South Bend, Ind. court late last week to answer two felony charges of child seduction. Biggs teaches seventh and eighth grade physical education and coaches at the local high school where the 16-year-old girl is a student. The investigation that led to Biggs' arrest was prompted by the girl's parents who first forbade the teen from having any contact with the teacher then found she was sneaking out anyway. Court documents allege Biggs' bought the girl a cell phone to replace one her parents had taken away, and the two allegedly exchanged hundreds of sexually explicit text messages.

Seems teenage girls do a little more than talk on the phone these days.

So let's say you're out antiquing with your child and you wander down an aisle only the hear a man yapping on a cell phone. You're already kind of annoyed by the guy because he's talking with the volume of a jackhammer in a library.

But it gets worse.

"Dude," he says into the phone, as you shuffle by with your child in your arms, "You've got to hire me a couple mexicans to help move this thing. Uh huh. Uh huh. Everyone needs a good beaner now and then."

Excuse me?

What hillbilly century do you live in, moron? This is acceptable talk to you in public places?

It's one thing to think you'll always stand up for what's right, especially in front of your kids, but it's another thing altogether to feel their weight in your arms and worry about their safety if you do something like confront a total stranger who clearly lacks a brain. And yet, saying nothing gives the impression that this kind of imbecility is A-OK for public discourse.

So here's my question: Do you say anything to him? And if so, what?
