Is it just me, or does it seem like swine flu hysteria is settling
down? While the news that the first US citizen death was of a pregnant
woman is terribly sad, it appears (knocking wood now) that it’s not
especially deadly for the young, healthy adults it’s been striking.
Of course, that might change this fall: most health experts believe the flu is likely to come back in the fall,
perhaps in a more serious form. However, scientists have figured out
the genotype of the virus and a vaccine is in the works. Whew.
Also in the “not as bad as originally feared” category is the wildfires in California and Arizona.
Originally firefighters believed 400 acres in the Los Padres National
Forest near Santa Barbara were burning; now it’s only 196 acres.
However, 1,000 homes have been evacuated and 2,000 more are on
evacuation advisory. In Arizona, a human-caused brushfire has burned
through 1500 acres around the Coronado National Forest.
There’s good news all over New England as well:
Maine governor John Baldacci signed gay marriage into law hours after
the Legislature passed a bill allowing it, and New Hampshire’s state
legislature passed a similar bill later yesterday as well.
