Benign neglect notwithstanding, don't you often wonder just how your kids spend an entire day? Wouldn't it be nice if
someone tallied up the minutes of your kid's day and then reported back to you on it?
Well, I can save you some trouble: the Australian Institute of Family
Studies did just that recently in a study of more than 3000 4 and 5
year olds.
In addition to drawing some conclusions about kids of
single parents and stay-at-home parents watching more TV, and "smart"
kids of better-educated parents watching less, they also found that
this is what kids did on a daily basis:
10 minutes of creating a mess (this has got to be higher)
16 minutes of being told off (and obviously this too)
13 minutes of crying (hand in hand with the above)
seven hours a day playing (of course)
11 hours sleeping (what a relief, eh?)
more than an hour a day sitting in a car (ugh. appalling.)
50
minutes being held and cuddled (did I mention it was the parents who
filled out time diaries? are we talking some data manipulation here?)
