Alaska! Is it because you're tucked so far away from the rest of the
U.S.? The long days? The long nights? Because we know all this
non-conformity with laws and regulations isn't just politics as usual.
For starters, Alaska Senator Ted Stevens is all but sunk now in his trial on
corruption charges that he accepted a quarter of a million dollars in
gifts and services from Bill Allen, an oil services millionaire. See,
Allen was working with the FBI when he asked Stevens -- over the phone,
people! -- whether they could get in trouble for what they were doing.
Stevens said they might have to pay a fine or do a little time in jail.
A guilty feeling Allen also told Stevens on tape that he loved him (so
sweet!).
