Ah, summer! Remember the
no-more-teachers-no-more-books feeling as school let out for the
summer? Summer vacation seemed to stretch endlessly ahead, two whole
months without school! Two months to do nothing, or everything. Two
whole months to...read a book? Truth be told, I probably read at least
30 books each summer (I was a geek and had no life), but not every kid
has his nose in a book all the time.
So what do you do?
Statistics show that kids must somehow leak brain cells during summer, or at
least tend to forget almost everything they learned from the year
before, and schools spend the first few weeks every year reminding kids
about fractions and punctuation before they go on to the new year's
work. So reading a few good books during the summer serves several
purposes: reconnecting misfiring synapses, getting your kid back in
gear for school, and providing something for you to nag him about. What
more could you ask for?
Here's a nice list of books by grade level compiled by an evil
beloved California school librarian. I'm not familiar with any of them,
but they sound pretty good. And they come librarian-recommended!
