Sunday, March 25th you know where you'll find me? I'll be at tryouts for our local women's roller derby team, the "Bellingham Roller Betties." Fueled by A & E's reality show "Roller Girls" there is a resurgence of a sport that started in the 1920s and reached the height of popularity during the 1970s, with fabulous cinematic triumphs such as Kansas City Bomber, and that episode of Charlie's Angels where Farrah takes to the rink.
Cincinnati has a team, as do Seattle, San Francisco, and New York. And many of the roller queens are mamas. Perhaps everyone needs an outlet for all that pent up ... energy. Whatever brings these women to the rink, all this toughness and athleticism and fishnet stockings makes me proud. Motherhood is a tough sport, the perfect training ground for serious kick-ass athleticism.
And what better way to overcome the monotony of dishes and laundry than a strong shoulder to the ribcage of a fellow tough chick? That'll make you feel just right!
