  • J Lo is Celeb Mom of the Year, Dina Lohan an also-ran

J.LossRemember when I said Dina Lohan isn’t winning Mom of the Year? Turns out I was right. That honor went to Jennifer Lopez, who has been a mother for about 3 months. The award was given by Mingling Moms of Long Island.

Dina was the runner-up, and she showed up to accept her award, unlike J. Lo, who perhaps...

  • The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America

lesbian momsWho are the most powerful lesbian moms in the United States? Out Magazine published an article on The Power 50. It was an article on the most powerful gay men and women in America. This article not only informed me that David Geffen and Anderson Cooper were gay (I'm the only person who didn't know that, aren't I?) but also prompted a great post on Mombian on who they thought were the most influential lesbian mommies in America.

So who would you think? Rosie O'Donnell seemed obvious, as did Mary Cheney (mom to be) and her partner Heather Roe. The head of The National Center for Lesbian Rights, Kate Kendall and Sandy Holmes aren't surprising nor were Kara Swisher and Megan Smith.

So who wasn't I expecting to make the list? Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels. After I read it, it made sense. I know they are very activist and probably raise a lot of money. But how about Sheryl Swoopes and Alisa Scott? Not only did I not know they were a couple, but I hadn't thought about either of their sexual orientations and I didn't know they had a child. (Okay, I looked it up and they are raising Swoopes son from a previous marriage together.)

There are many more on their list. Did they miss anyone?

  • Elisabeth Hasselbeck Puts Rosie Feud Rumors To Rest

Elisabeth Hasselbeck, by far the most annoying member of the hideous View roundtable in my opinion (and that's saying a lot), put to rest rumors of a rift between her and co-star Rosie O'Donnell.  Since Ro took over for the sorely missed Meredith Viera,  she's been mouthing off left and right, and even when what she says is true, which it often is, she's so obnoxious.  Elisabeth takes the bait every time, butting heads with Rosie and standing up for conservatives everywhere in her simpering, captain-of-the-debate-team little voice.

But talking to People magazine this week, Elisabeth admitted that even she was suprised when she and Rosie developed - gasp! - friendly feelings for one another.  "I've been to Rosie's house. We went swimming with the kids. We hang out. It's a nice friendship, and it's one that no one would have expected - even us."

Aw.  That's kind of nice.  Putting aside their differences for the sake of the kids and the show.  Good for you, gals!  I had a higher opinion of Elisabeth after reading that.  Then I read the part of the interview where she talked about "prepping" her body for another pregnancy (daughter Grace is almost 2), which pretty much canceled that higher opinion out. "I just need to get to a place where my body is ready to have another child. I think I'm the only TV person who's trying to put on 10 lbs.! I tend to train really hard."

She went right back to being annoying.

  • Fat, Single and Over 50? No China Adoptions for You!

China is tightening rules on foreign adoptions, barring parents who are unmarried, over 50 or obese, but said it will try to increase the number of children available to those who qualify, according to U.S. adoption agencies. The move comes amid a surge in foreign applications to adopt Chinese children. The United States is the No. 1 destination for children adopted abroad, but the number going to Europe and elsewhere is rising.

According to the NY Times, the new rules will come into effect on May 1 of 2007.  Furthermore, additional guidelines stipulated by Chinese officials state that adoptive parents must have "no criminal record, a high school diploma and be free of certain health problems like AIDS and cancer. Couples must have been married for at least two years and have had no more than two divorces between them. If either spouse was previously divorced, the couple cannot apply until they have been married for at least five years.  In addition, adoptive parents must have a net worth of at least $80,000 and income of at least $10,000 per person in the household, including the prospective adoptive child."

Ostensibly, Chinese authorities have stated that the new rules should reduce waiting times for couples, who often must wait for more than a year to adopt.  The vast majority of Chinese children adopted abroad are girls who are abandoned by couples who want a son but are bound by rules that limit urban families to one child only. (Anyone ever watch that Oprah on the orphanages that are literally teeming with abandoned girls?  Where so many girls die before they can be adopted?  My wife and I watched that when she was pregnant with our daughter. Had us in tears for weeks.)

Personally, I disagree with these guidelines.  If the ultimate goal is to place abandoned children with caring adults who will nurture and love these children, who the hell cares about someone's BMI, marital status or household income?  Since China has proven to be unable to deal with their own child abandonment issues, I think their primary concern should be how best to ensure that any/all unwanted children are adopted as quickly as possible.  Period.

There's a part of me that thinks China established these rules to get back at that bitch Rosie O'Donnell for her racist remarks last week.  What do you think?
