
You may have heard yesterday's edition of NPR's
All Things Considered for an interview with author Liza Mundy who wrote the book
Everything Conceivable,
which takes a hard look at the multibillion-dollar fertility industry,
paying special attention to the huge number of decisions couples are
forced to make, especially the heart-wrenching one that no one talks
about—the decision to reduce a multiple pregnancy.
There's been a
huge rise in multiple births lately, due in large part to the increased
incidence of in vitro fertilization. Twin births are now a 1 in 33
occurrence. While that make some go all warm and fuzzy inside, thinking
of matching Doublemint outfits, apparently there's a dark side of
multiple births that no one seems to talk about.
