Every time we go to Costco, I look longingly at the play equipment for sale there. Even though the thought that each family has to own their own play equipment, mostly because of the dearth of public parks in my area, it is undeniably grand to open the back door and let 'em run free.
I'll be the first to admit that living in a non-urban setting sucks for parents. We have to drive everywhere, the neighbors don't swear, and playgroups are dull. But for our kids? Pretty nice. Our new house has a wonderful backyard with lots of room for them to run, and dig, and squeal and climb. But you know what? They don't need anything but rocks and sticks and an old broken down picnic table to have a great time. They "eat grass like cows" (swells with pride) and make friends with ladybugs.
And right about now, in the beautiful but rainy and cold long gray winter Pacific Northwest, the kids are outside as much of each afternoon as possible. And it's heaven. Next up, Summer. I say bring it. On. Swimming pools and sunblock 45, baby. We don't need $1,500 play equipment to have fun around here. Especially if Mommy has a nice refreshing wine spritzer and can read in the shade.
