  • Fabulous Urban Playgrounds (for Your Kids)

The urban parent is often willing to pony up serious dosh to insure their kiddie has good fun, even if it involves weird inflatable birthday toys. But sometimes there is no substitute for the free public parks in your own neighborhood.  Cities are investing in creative and fabulous high quality climbing toys for public parks that are a nice peaceful counterpoint to the short-attention-span-video world many of our children inhabit.

Here is a round-up of some of the great parks in your area.

Washington D.C. Area - If you live in the Washington D.C. area, you should check out Clemyjontri Park in McClean, Virginia  (pictured right).  "Park" seems like a vast understatement in this case.

  • The Joys of Backyard Play Equipment

Every time we go to Costco, I look longingly at the play equipment for sale there.    Even though the thought that each family has to own their own play equipment, mostly because of the dearth of public parks in my area, it is undeniably grand to open the back door and let 'em run free.

I'll be the first to admit that living in a non-urban setting sucks for parents.  We have to drive everywhere, the neighbors don't swear, and playgroups are dull.  But for our kids?  Pretty nice.  Our new house has a wonderful backyard with lots of room for them to run, and dig, and squeal and climb.  But you know what? They don't need anything but rocks and sticks and an old broken down picnic table to have a great time.  They "eat grass like cows" (swells with pride) and make friends with ladybugs.

And right about now, in the beautiful but rainy and cold long gray winter Pacific Northwest, the kids are outside as much of each afternoon as possible.  And it's heaven.  Next up, Summer.  I say bring it.  On.  Swimming pools and sunblock 45, baby. We don't need $1,500 play equipment to have fun around here.  Especially if Mommy has a nice refreshing wine spritzer and can read in the shade.

  • 12 Cool Trikes to Covet

sky king tricycleLet me just begin this by saying that tricycles have changed an awful lot since I had one.  Cookie reviews twelve of them ($70 to —gulp— $265) just in time for a warmer-weather buying spree. I'm especially attracted to the primary-hued City Trike by Italtrike, the sleek Silverrider by Angeles, the bizarre but easy-to-spot-in-a-crowd Oko Trike by Italtrike, and the replica 1936 retro (reminds me of an Airstream trailer) Sky King, shown here in baby blue or here in red.

I'm sure my three-year old would be thrilled to own any one of these trikes, not to mention actually riding on them.  What about you?  Does your child have a favorite tricycle?

  • Fun in the Backyard: Buh Bye Winter

Around these parts, to say we're wearying of Winter would be a vast understatement.  And yes I know it's technically Spring, but in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, every day is November, baby. Even though the days of everyone outside playing while we sit on the patio sipping wine and telling stories seem decades away, an article rounding up play equipment, gives hope to those of us in the Land of Endless Gray Rainy Days.

Outside play equipment seems like quite an industry these days.  Costco has playsets starting at $3,000.  Playhouses at PoshTots go as high as $30,000.  I think one of the parents interviewed has a great approach.  Instead of buying an outdoor fancy play set, one mom decided to withstand the desire to buy more stuff, and watched while her kids turned the tree stump in the yard into "the kitchen."

Whatever your preference, won't you just be THRILLED to be outside with the kids instead of trapped indoors in utter rainy-day hell? Or is it just me?
