  I'm loving this little ode to make-believe -- in fact, that's the tagline for this flick: Make Believe, Not War -- and can't wait to see Son of Rambo, a screwy title for what looks to be a classic tale of childhood friendships and fantasy. Did you know there is a conspiracy to squelch the teachings of Intelligent Design from our schools? • Go Ahead and Take Young Kids to Racy Movies

  Because I have no clue what I'm doing as a parent -- and I mean that sincerely -- I am susceptible to taking parenting advice from New York Times movie writers and anybody else who tells me what I want to hear. Dangerous? Sure, but I figure, if a guy from the Times is wrecking his kids, can't I? • Childless Stars on Sacred Vessels and Your Baby Mumu

  This started out as a post on the best movie scene of a mom sticking up for her daughter, and although I came up empty in finding a clip of said scene, I discovered something just as classic: the writer and star of teen pregnancy juggernaut "Juno" talking about what it means to be pregnant. More cake. Mumus. Sacred vessels. And, wait for it, stretchy pants -- the gateway bottom to mom pant. (The best scene, by the way, involves Juno's step-mom -- played by the West Wing's Allison Janney -- totally giving it to a clucky, eye-rolling ultrasound tech. • Pregnancy Movies Make a Larger Point

  I didn’t realize it until I saw this Dallas Morning News article by Chris Vognar, but the recently released Juno is the third in a trifecta of wide-release movies about women who face an unplanned pregnancy and choose to carry the pregnancy to term – and in the case of the adult women, raise the baby, while the teen featured in Juno places her child for adoption. I thought the point Vognar made was interesting – that while no one would call any of these "family movies" in the traditional, treacly sense, they are all life-affirming, in all life's messy, imperfect glory. And that's not to say they follow some pro-life political script. The "family values" crowd would likely find all three of these movies horrendously offensive for their irreverence.   Read More... • Kids Movies for Adults and Heathens

  So far we've been immune to the frenzy that new children's flicks often arouse in children. But after watching a trailer for the Daniel Craig-starring "Golden Compass," a movie about something to do with Daniel Craig, the frenzy definitely hit our house -- only, it wasn't our daughter shrieking "Can we can can we plleeeeaaase!" Of course, not everyone is excited as I am about the movie. Some religious groups are bitter about the atheist themes and have called for boycotts. That's a moronic thing to do. As the movie trailer says, the greatest threat to the all-powerful, church-like enemy is "the curiosity of a child." As an adult who turned away from a god-is-perfect childhood household, I know from experience that banning different opinions is the best way to make children seek them out. Sure, maybe that's just me. But I have a feeling plenty of kids will be reading more into this movie than they would have before a boycott. And also, for the record, Daniel Craig.   Read More... • The Return of Popples, and Other Industry Gossip

  On Tuesday, I spent the morning at the International Licensing Expo on behalf of Babble. What is that, you ask? Honestly, I couldn't tell you.  But I got to play with live penguins and talk to a Muppet!  Here's some of the fun insider-y information I picked up while I was there: - Possibly inspired by the Care Bears (or John Travolta in Pulp Fiction), Popples are making a comeback. -  Sony is making a feature film of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Judging from the poster at right, I suspect the film will lack the charming simplicity of the book. -  Hannah Montana is taking over the world, whether we like it or not.  And we don't. -  The next Dreamworks animated film will be called Kung Fu Panda. It is exactly what it sounds like. -  Abby Cadabby is smaller than you'd expect. • "Knocked Up" -- The Deleted Scenes

  "The movie runs 1 hour and 53 minutes -- so we'll be back next Tuesday," my friend said.  That's right. I'm babysitting. It's Saturday night as I write this, and I am in the home of our friends in Pacific Heights -- drinking a bottle of wine and a six pack of Hamms while pretending to listen for the baby busying myself online while the baby sleeps and wondering which movie it was I last saw in the theater. When did "Forrest Gump" come out? Of course, that got me thinking about all the summer movies out right now -- including the one I want to see the most: "Knocked Up." And because it's very likely I won't see it until the DVD arrives, I am doing the next best thing. Finding pirate copies online. So thank you, You Tube. I may not be going out any time soon -- but at least I can watch some hilarious deleted scenes. The one below is funny -- but not as funny as this one. • New Nancy Drew Beat Down by Veronica Mars

  Early Nancy Drew packed heat. She drove a roadster, gave lip to the cops and kept her boyfriend, Ned, somewhere in the background -- always second fiddle to solving mysteries. From what I can tell, new Nancy Drew -- at least modern-day movie Nancy Drew -- is just trying to fit in. It's been years since I've read any Nancy Drew, and it's probably not surprising that I was more of a Hardy Boys fan anyway. But seeing this trailer for the new Nancy movie, I'm not all that excited. Veronica Mars seems to kick more butt. What do you think? • More with the Fuggin Penguin Movies?

  What started this trend anyway? Who in their right mind thinks penguins have become the go-to movie madstone? Oh right, your kids. Another summer, another friggin' penguin movie. Although it would be nothing short of shocking, shocking! if I was wrong, I think it was "Madagascar" that touched off this trend. The movie involved New York City animals that were trying to get back to their roots or something, and it featured some wise-ass penguins that ended up getting good ink. Then, last summer, it was "Happy Feet" -- a yarn about, you guessed it, penguins! Wise-ass penguins! (I think. I never actually saw the movie, but I take great delight in knowing that my in-laws did -- and loved it. Ahem.) And now, now it's "Surf's Up" -- an animated take about, wait for it, penguins. Surfing penguins. Ugh. Seriously, of all the animals in all the world, we've gotta stick with penguins? Can't your kids watch something cooler? Like a yak. Or a sloth. Sloths are the feel-good underdogs of next summer, I got a feeling. • "Knocked Up" Gives Us No Love

  I've been eagerly following the buzz leading up to the premiere of "Knocked Up" -- the parenting movie of the summer (because that description puts people in the seats!). I've scoured reviews and focused intently on all the ads. But still ... nothing. Strollerderby has been dissed. All I wanted was a simple mention as the movie approached -- something small, something like, "excellent!" or "perfection!" or "don't miss it!" Instead ... silence. They couldn't squeeze us into one ad? Oh well, I'm still going to watch it. • "Simpsons" Movie: Family Fun or a Decade Too Late?

  I've written before about TV shows that should have been turned into movies, say, 20 years ago. I predicted the demise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- and then went on to see it beat the crap out of the competition. Kids, combined with adults looking to relive their childhood, proved me wrong. So how about the "Simpsons" movie? I used to watch that show every week -- way back when it was on every week, as opposed to every 10 minutes. But now? I hate to say I've moved on. It's just not as funny as it used to be. So the idea of paying $10.50 to go see two hours of what I don't watch at home for free doesn't seem that appealing. But now I'm wondering whether I'm getting it all wrong again. What do you say? Will the movie make big bucks or simply go the way of the Plow King?
