  • Crafty: Beautiful Jewelry (From Trash and Scraps)

From reading craft blogs, I know I'm not the only one who laments the demise of the old Martha Stewart Kids magazine. Fortunately, the MS website picks up a lot of the slack and is well-stocked with cute party ideas, recipes, and activities. And on a seasonal basis, Martha's empire pumps out a digest-sized "Good Things" issue devoted to all the things that made the Kids magazine so great. It's on stands now, so grab it while you can and don't mistake it for the similarly designed Everyday Food (just get both, why don't you).

Anyway, down to crafty business: the standout craft in this special Good Things issue is going to knock the socks off any kid who counts Fancy Nancy as a role model, and if you're like me and saving cardboard paper towel tubes but never thinking of a creative purpose for them other than "Hey, telescope!", this is going to be up your alley too.

These sassy little bangles are just a slice of cardboard tube (you cut that for them, now) plastered with whatever decorations you've got. Once the glue dries, cut a slit in the bracelet so it can be slipped over the wrist, and voilą, you're accessorized.

  • Kitchenista: Because Mondays are for Giant Cupcakes!

giant cupcakeMy cakes are legendary in my house: stunningly ugly, but at least they taste good. One year I forgot to let the cake cool completely before icing the multiple layers (to hold more icing, of course), and no number of toothpicks unskillfully placed could keep the layers from sliding off and becoming the Leaning Cake of Pisa. Martha Stewart, I am not. Though I do make everything from scratch which almost makes up for the ugliness of my cakes.

My kids made a cake this past week at their dad's house. I'm pretty sure he had never made one before, either, and even though they used a mix I am told that the project took about 4 hours. They brought the leftovers over this morning, and you know what? It was pretty good.

And it's totally got me thinking about this huge-ass cupcake. Doesn't this picture make you want one? I mean, like RIGHT NOW? Forget icing 3 dozen tedious little things, why not just slather on a can of frosting (or make your own!) on this baby and you've got a delicious heart attack all ready to happen!

Cake. What a way to go.

  • Kitchenista: Popsicles, Always a Good Thing

Oh, Martha, how you taunt us. No sooner do I give in and buy a case of fruit juice pops at Costco than here you are, with your fancy schmancy hand-crafted ice pops, reminiscent of the Bullets of our youth but without all the nasty corn syrup and carcinogenic food coloring. Will I make them? Yes, yes I will. As soon as I can find the box in which I packed the popsicle molds when we moved. So maybe next year, then.

Meanwhile, I did run across a couple of these ice cube trays from Ikea when I was unpacking, which I'd bought in some fit of Donna Reed-ness and never used. Despite the admonition that they're only to be used with water, I've been filling them with juice and we've been having our ice water with the addition of little heart-shaped lemonade cubes or star-shaped mango-juice cubes all summer long. Hydration has never been so cute.

  • Pretty Crafts with Kids for the UnMarthas

Pining for cooler weather or an excuse to stay inside after playing in the pool, but about as Martha Stewart as Paris Hilton? How about some fabulous whimsical handmade globes!!  The beautiful globes pictured right are courtesy of blogger Little Elephants, who did these (with a gaggle of kids - imagine!) for her daughter's birthday party.  Granted, these are more appropriate for school-age kids, but with sufficient adult supervision (and serious adult-help to glue the lids on) they are possible.

Ingredients include sea glass, plastic sea creatures, glycerin, and lots of glittery sparkly things.  Another version of this globe is also featured at Kiddley (the now on hiatus fabulous kid craft site).

  • Martha Stewart Launches Craft Line, Website...Finally!

puppet kitOhmigodohmigodohmigod! Martha Stewart's craft site has finally launched! Go here now! It's awesome!

From craft supplies you know and love, like bone folders to food packaging supplies to scrapbook papers, Martha's site boasts 500 different products available online or at Michael's stores. Shoot. Let's face it. It's because of Martha that I own bone folders, Mod Podge, glassine envelopes, and teensy tiny hole punches. And before I had kids, I used all of it. A lot.

There is a special section for kits: party decor, jewelry making, and entertaining to name a few, as well as a whole section dedicated to kids

Commence freaking out now! I've already started!

  • Martha Stewart Relaunches Kids' Web Site

Look, I'm an unashamed and unapologetic fan of Martha Stewart. Always have been. And the new MarthaStewart.com portal is exactly why, especially the kids' section. Cute birthday party ideas that don't involve licensed characters? Sign me up, even though I've never baked a cake from scratch in my entire life. Clever organizational ideas? Always useful in my tight-fitting, tiny-closeted house. And who doesn't need more ways for their kids to sit down with glue and scissors and just focus for an hour or two? Martha's got 'em.

The site offers daily "Good Things" like this Sibling Kit for kids with a new baby in the family, and it's chock full of synergy--recipes from other parts of the site are referenced on the Kid's page, kid's crafts are crossreferenced in the main Crafts section.

Now, how can I do this homemade tap shoes thing without destroying my hardwood floors? Martha's not infallible, I guess.
