Sixteen-year-old Australian actress Keisha Castle-Hughes announced last week that she is expecting her first baby, with her 19-year-old boyfriend.
Perhaps life is imitating art: Castle-Hughes recently portrayed Mary in “The Nativity Story,” a new film chronicling Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus. Looks like she took her role as an unmarried teenage mother a little too seriously…
Now, I don’t believe that one has to be married, or a legal adult, to be a good mother. But I do believe that being legally able to consume alcohol after a hard day of caring for a newborn is extremely important. It may also be helpful to be legally able to drive – like, say to the pediatrician’s office, or to the grocery store. As a 16-year-old, Castle-Hughes will have a hard time doing any of this - the legal drinking and driving ages in Australia are 17 and 18, respectively.
As a successful film star (and the youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee in history, for “Whale Rider”), it is probably fair to assume that Castle-Hughes is far more mature than the average teenager. She’s seen a bit of the world, had a taste of fame, and even given birth Hollywood-style. So, why not go for the real thing? Beats the hell out of going to high school, that’s for sure. At the very least, she’s got more money than the knocked-up fry cook down at McDonald’s – so she’s got that going for her.
