As a mother of multiples, it is always hilarious when people ask me if my boy/girl twins are identical. My favorite response is "Well, there is one big difference". So how does the mother of Brenda and Aiden (formerly Bonnie) Shrum field this question? According to the SundayMirror.co.uk, Brenda and Bonnie looked so much alike as children that even their own mother had trouble distinguishing between the two of them. Now it is not a problem at all. Bonnie has become a man. Not in the "Middlesex" kind of way, but she began going through the procedures required for a sex change operation when she was 32.
The article says that he had a sex change when he was 32, but then later says "He uses the men's toilet but not the urinal, as he has stopped short of a full sex change". So technically, Bonnie/Aidan is still a woman, which in my book might be the most confusing part of the whole thing if I were his sister.
Brenda said that it was pretty hard for her to adjust to the idea that her identical twin sister was now her brother.
I can imagine where that would be the case, it was hard enough for me adjusting to my little brother becoming a father. I'm guessing the adjustment was even more difficult for his daughter.
Aidan says he is much happier as a man. In fact, he runs conferences that deal with gender issues. I say good for him.
