• Donated Breastmilk Comes to NY, Slowly

  Hudson Valley Breastfeeding recently became only the second facility in all of New York state to receive a license to store and dispense donated breastmilk from a milk bank. Milk banks collect expressed milk from rigorously screened and tested volunteers, pasteurize it, and dispense to hopsitals or individuals with a prescription. It can fill a gap where breastfeeding isn't possible, or where it's slow to get established. Given that many of the circumstances that make breastfeeding difficult to near impossible—such as severe prematurity, maternal illness, or trying to switch away from formula at a later age due to allergies—are also times when the fine-tuned nutrition and infection-fighting properties of breastmilk are particularly needed, it's surprising to me that New York has been so slow to embrace this option. • Mother's Milk - Good Enough for Ben, but What About Jerry?

  Oh, that PETA, always thinking. Not necessarily thinking what you or I would think, but hey . . . the Norfolk, Va.-based group that's made meat-eaters everywhere look at me like I'm about to whip the prime rib off their plate and beat them with it has turned their eyes to the frozen north. Well, to Vermont, the home of two fat guys who make moms cream. No really, they do - Ben and Jerry make ice cream. Pervert. I blame my failed attempts to make the leap from vegetarian to vegan on these guys, but PETA was trying to give me a way out. Hey, don't use cow's milk, they said, use mom's! • Indiana Hospital To Collect Human Milk

  There have been a lot of breastfeeding posts on the Derby lately, and each one has inspired many comments in the vein of, "I physically CAN'T breastfeed, and you lactation nazis need to stop making me feel guilty about it." These comments always surprise me, because I know many women who are pro-breastfeeding, but I don't know one who would feel anything but sympathy for women who have had surgery, or who take medication which precludes nursing, or who struggle with other physical limitations.  I mean, how could even the most strident lactation proponent judge a woman who's had a double mastectomy? Now, such physical problems don't have to preclude babies who really need it from getting human milk, as hospitals are taking steps to help sick and premature babies whose mother's can't breastfeed get pasteurized milk from human donors.   Read More...
