There
have been a lot of breastfeeding posts on the Derby lately, and each
one has inspired many comments in the vein of, "I physically CAN'T
breastfeed, and you lactation nazis need to stop making me feel guilty
about it."
These comments always surprise me, because I know many
women who are pro-breastfeeding, but I don't know one who would feel
anything but sympathy for women who have had surgery, or who take
medication which precludes nursing, or who struggle with other physical
limitations. I mean, how could even the most strident lactation
proponent judge a woman who's had a double mastectomy?
Now, such
physical problems don't have to preclude babies who really need it from
getting human milk, as hospitals are taking steps to help sick and
premature babies whose mother's can't breastfeed get pasteurized milk
from human donors.
