We've put on our crankypants before about this business of schools banning hugs. Hate to bring it up again, but this week the parents of an eighth-grader in Mascoutah, IL, just outside of St. Louis, have dropped their dispute with school officials for giving their daughter two detentions for hugging her friends goodbye. C'mon, you gotta fight for those hugs people!
Melissa and Dean Coulter had told their daughter, Megan, to serve the two detentions to clear her record, and promised to bring it up with the school board. But now after meeting with school officials, the Coulters have withdrawn their request to speak at a board meeting. ''I'm grateful they sought this meeting and we could have a level of discussion that helps us both understand each other's concerns more clearly,'' superintendent Sam McGowen told the AP.
