In this week’s 5-Minute Time Out, Colette LaBouff Atkinson
interviews the authors and identical twin sisters, Ellen and Julia Lupton,
of D.I.Y.
Kids and finds out how you too can get your kids to ditch the Nike shirts
and lead toys, instead creating their own fashion and fun. The sisters first
book defined D.I.Y., but this one encourages you get out the scissors, sewing
needles and whatever else is lying around your house for the entertainment and
enrichment of your children. Sure there are lots of cute sock bean bags to be
made, but the bigger message the Lupton’s have for their kids is to not get
sucked in to what the corporate world wants you to buy, wear or eat. Also to be
aware of your surroundings; identifying what is authentic vs. marketing-made.
Sounds like a great car trip game to me. So what’s the best thing your kid has
crafted out of Cheerios and pipe cleaner? And have you marked it up 200% and
hawked it on Etsy? Do tell.
