  • Best. Activity. Ever. Bury a Pirate Chest

William F. Buckley may have seemed like a stodgy, erudite old professor, but dude had mad parenting skilz, at least when it came to making up elaborate activities that were clearly cherished forever.

  • Demeter Play Doh Cologne. Whatever Will They Think Of Next?

I'm a big fan of Demeter Fragrances, with their quirky scents that mimic almost uncannily what they're intended to mimic. Grass, Tomato, Laundromat—I've had several over the years, including Play Doh. Not that I've ever really dreamed of smelling like Play Doh, but it was hard to resist. And it couldn't smell more like the real thing if you actually rubbed Play Doh on your pulse points. It's really amazing.

  • Geeky Robot-Building Dads Are the Best

robot dadWho needs a dad who will teach you how to throw a curveball or play horsie when you have a dad like this? Geekdad, one of our very favorite resources for all things great, pointed us towards the interview with their hero of the week from Robot magazine. Nao Maru spends quality time with his kids by building robots. Kickass, award-winning robots. In fact, "In less that two years Maru and his two young sons went from complete novices to winning the ROBO-ONE 10 championship against the best humanoid robot builders Japan has to offer." Now that sounds like bonding, and thank god they didn't try to build a baby. Maru isn't one of those parents who takes over and just lets the kids hold the welder for a second. In the interview, he says about building one cool custom robot, "We wanted it to have an original character, but with some similarity to traditional anime robots. More than anything, it had to be something that would excite and inspire all of us, especially the boys, otherwise it wouldn't be worth doing."

Excuse me, I think I have a nanoparticle in my eye... Yeah, I know, that wouldn't account for the watering. It's just the sweet geeky thing gets me right here, every time.

  • Bounce-House/Waterslide Combo. Seriously, What Dad Wouldn't Love It?

splahs and play slideMy husband is the ultimate GeekDad. His latest obsession is filling our tiny backyard with some sort of climbing monstrosity that our kids will use four times and that we will eventually end up selling on Craigslist when we move. Which we will have to do because we rent. (I keep telling him...)

He scours websites for play gyms. He oohs and ahs over above-ground pools. (I. Know.) The Target summer catalog has been cracked open to a page containing waterslide/pool combos and sprinkler thingies ever since it arrived earlier this week. I am very afraid that the kids and I will return from our vacation next month to find some sort of princess castle/mountain climbing gym parked next to our barbecue.

Thank god he hasn't see this yet. Or perhaps he has, in which case, we're in trouble.

I know Father's Day is coming up and all, but he's not allowed to get this.

  • Digi Photo Wallpaper Makes a Kid's Room Really His Own

This week, Lil E peered up at me while we were reading pre-naptime books, blooped out his paci and said very seriously, "Mommy, I want to sleep in a big boy bed."

I've been wondering recently if it is that time or if there is any possible way my child will sleep in his crib through kindergarten. But just like weaning and restricting the use of that golden pacifier and even slow steps toward potty training, Lil E tells me when he is ready. We've agreed to wait until he is three and he is good with getting a big boy bed as a birthday present. But now my mind is spinning with how we will transition his room from nursery to kiddie without making it too big boy or too little baby. God help us, the changing table will go out with the crib and then we will free up two walls for our own personal extreme toddler room make-over.

Although I still have several months before all this transition takes place, I know one decorating tip we will be incorporating for sure: The bad-ass digital photo wallpaper like the kind Dave at Geekdad just had installed in his kid's room. I love that it is bold, unique and with a little bit of tech-play and cash-investment, creates a room for you kid that is really about the kid. No more eye-rolling at the standard "boy-theme" deco available at Target and Pottery Barn Kids and other gender-generic places. I'm thinking about a gigantic golf scene with Tiger, Ernie and Annika, scaled to wall-size for my boy. Or maybe an American Idol stage (oh wait, maybe that's more for me). Just imagining it has me just as ready as Lil E to pack up the crib and diapers and slap up some very cool custom wallpaper.
