  • Gender Test Kits Get It Wrong -- Often

Don't you hate it when you spend upwards of $300 on an unproven at-home genetics testing kit that you ordered online to find out whether you were pregnant with a boy or a girl and then you made lots of decisions based on the results and -- crap! -- the damn thing gave you the wrong results?

If I had a nickel everytime that happened, I'd be as rich as the people who sell these things. Now, if you fell for the marketing and spent your future offspring's college starter fund, you're not alone.

  • New Pregnancy Test Reveals Baby's Sex at Six Weeks

pink or blueA "revolutionary" and highly controversial (and, let's face it, kinda creepy) pregnancy test that can detect gender before many pregnant women see their OB for their first prenatal appointment is now available for sale online.

Moms-to-be prick their fingers, draw blood, and then send their sample off for DNA testing. Results are mailed back with parents who find out the gender of their baby weeks sooner than when tests are normally performed at around 20 weeks.

The Pink or Blue Early Test Kit not only boasts the second worst name ever for a baby product (first place: My Breast Friend), but will cost almost 400 bucks. You know people will pay it, too.

Naturally, the test kit has caused outrage from opponents who say that the kit will spur "wrong-sex" abortions. They accuse parents of "playing God."

The kit's supporters counter that parents are excited by their pregnancy and many want to know the sex of their baby to plan nurseries or baby gear purchases. "They don’t want to wait until their 20-week scan to find the sex.”

No one is happier about this than retailers who will see potential customers in their shops weeks sooner. Oh, and those muralists.  Their choo-choo trains or princess castles will be on nursery walls with plenty of time for paint to dry.
